Charles Peete Rose Jr. (born January 5, 1942) is an American journalist and talk show host. From 1991 to 2017, he hosted the talk show Charlie Rose on PBS and Bloomberg LP. On his show, he interviewed many important people. These included thinkers, writers, politicians, athletes, and scientists. The show was known for its serious and thoughtful discussions.

Rose also co-anchored CBS This Morning from 2012 to 2017. He worked with Gayle King and Norah O'Donnell. He interviewed many famous people and leaders there. Rose also filled in as anchor for the CBS Evening News. In 2012, he hosted Person to Person with Lara Logan. This show interviewed celebrities in their homes. Since 2022, Rose has hosted online interviews called Charlie Rose Conversations. In November 2017, his work at PBS and CBS ended due to serious concerns about his behavior. A lawsuit related to these concerns was settled in November 2024.

Early Life and Education

Charlie Rose was born in Henderson, North Carolina. He was the only child of Margaret and Charles Peete Rose Sr. His parents were tobacco farmers and owned a country store. As a child, Rose lived above the store. He helped with the family business from age seven. Rose said his strong curiosity often got him into trouble.

He was a high school basketball star in Henderson. Rose went to Duke University. He first planned to study medicine. But he became interested in politics. This happened during an internship with Senator B. Everett Jordan. He graduated in 1964 with a degree in History. He later earned a law degree from Duke University School of Law in 1968. He met his first wife, Mary King, while at Duke.

After college, Rose worked for the BBC as a freelance reporter. In 1972, he got a job as a weekend reporter for WPIX-TV. His big break came in 1974. Bill Moyers hired him as managing editor for a PBS series. In 1975, Moyers made him executive producer of Bill Moyers Journal. Rose soon started appearing on camera. An interview with Jimmy Carter won a Peabody Award in 1976. He then worked at several networks. He improved his interview skills. Later, KXAS-TV in Dallas–Fort Worth hired him. They gave him a late-night slot for The Charlie Rose Show.

Working at CBS News

Rose worked for CBS News from 1984 to 1990. He was the anchor of CBS News Nightwatch. This was the network's first late-night news show. He often interviewed famous people on it. This was similar to his later PBS show. An interview on Nightwatch won a News & Documentary Emmy Award in 1987. In 1990, Rose left CBS. He became anchor of Personalities for Fox TV. But he left after six weeks. He did not like the show's focus on short, popular stories.

On September 30, 1991, Charlie Rose began on PBS. It started being shown nationwide in 1993. In 1994, Rose moved the show to a studio owned by Bloomberg LP. This allowed for high-quality video interviews. On the show, he talked with many important people. These included writers, politicians, athletes, and scientists. The show was known for its serious and intellectual discussions.

Many famous people appeared on the show. Barack Obama was on the show 11 times. Other former presidents like Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton also appeared. Filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino were guests. Comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock also joined him. The show ran for 26 years, from 1991 to 2017.

Reporting for 60 Minutes

Rose was a reporter for 60 Minutes II from 1999 until 2005. He became a reporter for 60 Minutes in 2008. He once said that a good interviewee wants to share their ideas. They should be spontaneous, real, and passionate.

On November 15, 2011, it was announced that Rose would return to CBS. He would help anchor CBS This Morning. This show replaced The Early Show. It started on January 9, 2012. His co-anchors were Gayle King and Erica Hill. In July 2012, Norah O'Donnell replaced Hill. The show became very popular because of their good teamwork.

Rose interviewed many celebrities and leaders on the show. These included Donald Trump and Bill Gates. He also spoke with Steve Jobs and President Barack Obama. An interview with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad won him another Peabody Award in 2013.

A new series of interviews began in April 2022. It is called Charlie Rose Conversations. These online episodes have featured interviews with people like Thomas Friedman and Ray Dalio.

Awards and Honors

Rose received the 2014 Vincent Scully Prize. This award is given for excellent work in architecture and urban design. The National Building Museum said he led "insightful conversations" about cities. He also received an honorary degree from the State University of New York at Oswego in 2014. This was for his work in media. In 2016, Duke University also gave him an honorary degree.

After the concerns about his behavior in 2017, many of his awards were taken back. Sewanee: The University of the South took back his honorary degree in 2018. The State University of New York at Oswego also revoked his honorary degree in 2018.

In November 2017, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rockville Centre canceled an award for Rose. The Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism was also taken back. This happened on November 24, 2017. The University of Kansas also rescinded an award given to him in 2017. Duke University's DeWitt Wallace Center for Media & Democracy also took back an award in December 2017.

The National Building Museum no longer lists his name as a winner of the Vincent Scully Prize. However, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill decided to keep him in their N.C. Journalism Hall of Fame.

Charlie Rose was married to Mary Rose from 1968 until their divorce in 1980. In 1992, he began dating Amanda Burden. She was a socialite and city planning official. They stopped dating around 2006.

In March 2006, Rose had heart surgery in Paris. He had a procedure to repair a heart valve. He returned to his show in June 2006 to talk about his recovery. In February 2017, he announced he would have another surgery for the same heart valve.

Rose owns several homes. These include a large house in Henderson, North Carolina. He also has a beach home in Bellport, New York. He owns an apartment in The Sherry-Netherland in New York City. He also has apartments in Washington, D.C., and Paris. In 1990, he bought a large soybean farm in North Carolina. He named it Grassy Creek Farm.
