Clayton is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. It is often seen as a nearby town to Raleigh. In 2020, Clayton had a population of 26,307 people. This was a big jump from 16,116 people in 2010. By 2024, the town's population was estimated to be over 30,000! This growth is happening because Clayton is close to the Research Triangle area. It also has easy access to major roads like I-40 and US 70.

Where is Clayton?
Clayton is mostly in western Johnston County. A small part of it reaches into Wake County. A special highway, the Clayton Bypass, was finished in 2008. It helps drivers get around town more easily. US 70 connects Clayton to Interstate 95 at Smithfield. Downtown Raleigh is about 16 miles northwest. Many smaller communities near Clayton also use Clayton mailing addresses. These include Cleveland and Powhatan.
The town covers about 17 square miles of land. A very small part is water. Clayton is part of the Neuse River area. The town's borders now reach the Neuse River itself.
The Town Hall is at 111 East Second Street. It shares its building with The Clayton Center. This center is a place for shows and meetings.
