History of Clyde, Ohio
Early Settlers and Naming
In the 1700s, the land where Clyde now stands was home to the Wyandot tribe. The first known settler in Clyde was Jesse Benton. Another person, Samuel Pogue, had planned to settle there after the War of 1812.
When Pogue returned in 1820, Jesse Benton had already built a cabin. Benton later gave his land claim to Pogue for a barrel of whiskey. Pogue lived in Benton's cabin until he passed away in 1828. The city of Clyde was named after Clyde, New York.
Clyde's Role in the Automobile Industry
In the early 1900s, Clyde became part of the exciting automobile revolution. A company called Elmore Manufacturing Company started here, making early cars. General Motors took over Elmore in 1909 and moved its operations to Detroit in 1919.
However, Louis Krebs, who worked at Elmore, started his own company. This company later became the Clydesdale Motor Truck Company. After General Motors left, Krebs bought their old site in Clyde for his truck business. Sadly, these buildings, later owned by Clyde Porcelain Steel, burned down in 1945.
Whirlpool Corporation in Clyde
The Whirlpool Corporation bought Clyde Porcelain Steel Co. in 1952. They began making washing machines there. In 1954, Whirlpool also bought the nearby property of the Bendix Corporation. This made Clyde a major center for washing machine production for many years.
On August 6, 2020, then-President Donald Trump visited the Whirlpool Corporation plant in Clyde. This was part of his presidential election campaign. He was the first president to visit Sandusky County in over 100 years.
Environmental Cleanup Efforts
In 2007, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (Ohio EPA) began looking into environmental concerns in the Clyde area. They tested the soil at a former Whirlpool property called Whirlpool Park in Green Springs, Ohio. These tests showed that the soil had some chemicals called polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs).
Whirlpool Corporation worked with the Ohio EPA to clean up the site. By January 2016, the EPA reported that Whirlpool Park had been successfully cleared of PCB contamination. This cleanup helped make the area safer for everyone.
