Coppell is a city in Texas, located in the northwest part of Dallas County. It's like a suburb of Dallas, meaning many people who work in Dallas live in Coppell. History of Coppell

George Coppell
George Coppell

The Coppell area was first settled by families from Germany and France in the 1840s. Some settlers from the Peters Colony also came here around that time.

The town was first called Gibbs Station. This name honored Barnett Gibbs, who was one of Texas's first lieutenant governors. In 1892, the town's name changed to Coppell. It was named after George Coppell, a banker from New York. He was involved in building the local railroad line.

In 1955, the community officially became a city. This happened after people voted 41 to 1 in favor of it. A big change came in 1974 when the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW Airport) opened nearby. Coppell quickly grew from a small farming village into a large suburban community. By 2000, most of the land for homes was developed. The population grew to over 35,000 people.

Today, Coppell has many homes. It also has a growing number of businesses. These include warehouses and transportation centers. They are mostly on the south and west sides of the city, close to the airport.
