Crémines is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the Jura bernois administrative district. This area is part of the canton of Bern. Crémines is in the French-speaking part of the Bernese Jura.

History of Crémines

Crémines has a long history. It was first mentioned in official records in 1461. Back then, it was called Crimene.

Early Times and Changes

The oldest signs of people living here are some graves from the early Middle Ages. For a long time, the town was owned by the leader of the Moutier-Grandval Abbey. During the Middle Ages, and even later, a place called Pré de Sales in Crémines was used for duels. These were formal fights to settle disagreements.

In 1531, the village changed its religion. It accepted the new faith of the Protestant Reformation. This happened along with the rest of the Grandval area.

Becoming Part of Switzerland

Later, in 1797, France won a war. Crémines then became part of a French region called Mont-Terrible. A few years later, in 1800, it moved to another French region, Haut-Rhin. After Napoleon was defeated, a big meeting called the Congress of Vienna happened in 1815. Crémines was then given to the Canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Work and Industry

Until about 1900, most people in Crémines worked in farming. Some also made things at home, like pottery, watch parts, and old guns called arquebuses. Things started to change when factories grew in nearby Moutier. A railroad was built between Solothurn and Moutier from 1904 to 1908. This made it easier for factories to come to Crémines.

Today, more than half of the people working in Crémines are in the industrial sector. This means they work in factories or related businesses. In 1972, a zoo opened in the municipality, which is a fun place to visit.
