Culpho (say "Cul-fo") is a small village in the East Suffolk area of Suffolk, England. It's about 4 miles (6.4 km) northeast of Ipswich. It is also about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) west of Woodbridge. In 2021, only 48 people lived there.

Nearby villages include Great Bealings, Westerfield, and Playford. From 1974 to 2019, Culpho was part of the Suffolk Coastal district.

What's in a Name? The History of Culpho

The name Culpho has a long history. The earliest known record of the village is Culfole. This name appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086. At that time, 22 families lived in Culpho.

In the 1100s, the name changed slightly. It was called Colfho in 1168 and Culfo by 1175. Later, in 1250, it was recorded as Colvesho. The name comes from Old English. It probably means "Cūþwulf's hōh". Hōh means a "spur of land" or a small hill.

St Botolph's Church: A Look Back in Time

The village has a historic church called St Botolph's. The oldest parts of this church are from the 1200s. This includes the chancel, which is the area around the altar. The main part of the church, called the nave, has features from the 1300s. These include a doorway and some windows.

You can also find a 1300s piscina in the chancel. A piscina is a stone basin used for washing holy vessels. The church's baptismal font is from the 1400s. This is where baptisms take place. The church has a tower on its southwest side. The porch is built into the bottom of this tower. The roof of the nave was rebuilt in the 1600s.

The church was repaired and updated in 1884. Today, it is a Grade II* listed building. This means it is a very important historic building. In the 1200s, St Botolph's church was given to Leiston Abbey. Today, the church shares its priest with nearby villages. These include Great Bealings, Little Bealings, and Playford.

Culpho: A Thankful Village

Culpho is known as one of the "Thankful Villages". This is a special group of villages in England and Wales. These villages did not lose any of their soldiers in the First World War. It means that every soldier who went to war from Culpho came home safely. This is a very rare and special fact.
