Danube is a small town in Herkimer County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 801 people lived there. This was a bit less than the 1,039 people who lived there in 2010.

The town got its name from the famous Danube River in Europe. This name was chosen by early German immigrants who moved here in the 1700s.

Danube is located in the southeastern part of Herkimer County. It is southeast of the city of Little Falls. The Mohawk River flows just south of the town.

History of Danube

The first European settlers came to the area around 1730. They built homes on land that was part of the Mohawk people's territory.

In 1712, the Mohawk people agreed to let some German settlers, called Palatine Germans, live here. This was in exchange for help from Queen Anne of Great Britain. She promised to help protect them from the French and their Native American allies. Later, a fort called Fort Schuyler was built near a major Mohawk settlement.

The town of Danube was officially created in 1817. It was formed from a part of the town of Minden. Later, in 1828, a part of Danube was used to create the town of Stark.

Two important historical places in Danube are the Herkimer Home and the Mohawk Upper Castle Historic District. Both are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means they are important to the country's history.
