Denis Cheryshev's Club Career
Starting Out in Football
Denis Cheryshev was born in Nizhny Novgorod, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. He began his football journey at Sporting de Gijón. His father, Dmitri Cheryshev, was also a football player there.
Denis later moved with his father to Burgos. He joined a local youth team called CD Burgos Promesas 2000 when he was nine years old. During this time, he was chosen to play for the youth teams of the Castile and León region.
Time at Real Madrid
In 2002, Cheryshev joined Real Madrid's famous youth academy. He spent many years learning and growing as a player there. When he was still a junior player, he played nine games for Real Madrid Castilla, which is Real Madrid's reserve team. This was during the 2008–09 season. During this time, he became good friends with Nacho, who later became a Spanish national team player.
Over the next two years, Cheryshev played 61 matches and scored 11 goals for the reserve team. He was a key player in their attack. His team earned promotion to the Segunda División (the second division of Spanish football) after five years.
Cheryshev played his first game in the second division on August 17, 2012. He played the whole game in a 2–1 loss against Villarreal. On November 27, he played his first official game for Real Madrid's main team. This was a 3–0 win against Alcoyano in the Copa del Rey (Spanish Cup).
In September 2013, Cheryshev was loaned to Sevilla, another top Spanish team. He was supposed to stay for the rest of the season. However, he had many injuries and only played four league games. Sevilla decided not to keep him. So, he joined Villarreal on loan for the 2014–15 season instead.
Cheryshev scored in his first game for Villarreal on August 24, 2014. He scored the second goal in a 2–0 win against Levante. He recovered from his injuries and played very well at Villarreal. He scored seven goals in 40 games across all competitions.
After his loan, Cheryshev returned to Real Madrid. He played his first top-flight game for them on September 19, 2015. He played for 13 minutes in a 1–0 win against Granada. He scored his first goal for Real Madrid on December 2. This was in a 3–1 away win against Cádiz in the Spanish Cup. However, his playing in this match caused a problem. He was not supposed to play because he had received three yellow cards in the previous tournament. Because of this, Real Madrid was removed from the tournament.
On February 1, 2016, Cheryshev was loaned to Valencia until June. He played his first game for Valencia two days later. He came on as a substitute in a 7–0 loss against Barcelona in the cup semi-finals. He scored his only goal for Valencia on February 13. He scored with a header in a 2–1 win against Espanyol.
Returning to Villarreal
On June 15, 2016, Cheryshev went back to Villarreal permanently. He signed a contract to stay until 2021. On August 14, 2018, he returned to Valencia on loan again. He scored two goals during the season, helping the team finish in fourth place.
Playing for Valencia
Cheryshev joined Valencia permanently on June 29, 2019. The club paid €6 million for him. He stayed for three years, but he had many injury problems during this time. He left Valencia after his contract ended.
Time at Venezia
On August 31, 2022, Cheryshev signed a two-year contract with Venezia. He had an option to stay for an extra season. He scored two goals in his third game in Serie B (the second division in Italy). This was in a 4–1 away win against Cagliari on October 1.
Latest Club: Panionios
On September 22, 2024, Cheryshev joined Panionios. This club plays in the Super League Greece 2 in Greece.
International Career for Russia
Before playing for the Russian national team, Cheryshev could also have played for Spain. This is because he has dual nationality (he is a citizen of both countries). In 2011, he said in an interview that he felt more Spanish than Russian. However, he accepted an invitation to play for the Russian team in November 2012.
He made his debut for Russia eight days later in a friendly game. It was a 2–2 draw against the United States. Interestingly, his father, Dmitri, had played against the same team 20 years earlier.
Cheryshev played his first competitive game on August 14, 2013. He came on as a substitute in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland. After only five minutes, he had to leave the field due to an injury. Russia lost that game 1–0.
He was called up to a group of 25 players for the 2014 World Cup. He was the only player in that group who did not play club football in Russia. However, he was not chosen for the final 23-player squad. He also missed the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament because of an injury.
After more than two years, Cheryshev played for the national team again on March 27, 2018. This was in a friendly game against France. On May 11, he was included in the larger squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He was then named as one of the final 23 players.
He played his first game in the World Cup on June 14. He came on as a substitute for an injured player in the first group game against Saudi Arabia. He scored two goals in that game, helping Russia win 5–0. He scored his third goal of the tournament against Egypt in a 3–1 victory. He scored another goal in the quarter-finals against Croatia. He curled a shot past the goalkeeper from outside the penalty area. Russia lost that game in a penalty shootout.
Cheryshev was part of a group of 30 players for UEFA Euro 2020 in May 2021. On June 2, he was included in the final squad. He came on as a substitute in the first group game against Belgium. He played for 33 minutes before being replaced himself. The manager said he was substituted because he "did not fit into the game." He did not play in the next two matches, and Russia was eliminated from the tournament.
