The Dominican Republic first joined the Olympic Games in 1964. This was when Alberto Torres de la Mota, also known as "El Gringo," competed in the 100-meter race. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, Manuel Felix Diaz won a gold medal in boxing. Gabriel Mercedes also won a silver medal in Taekwondo that year. Four years later, at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Félix Sánchez won another gold medal in the 400-meter hurdles. On the same night, Luguelín Santos earned a silver medal in the 400 meters, becoming the youngest ever Olympic medalist in that event. Luisito Pie won a bronze medal in Taekwondo at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2020 Summer Olympics were a very successful year for the Dominican Republic. Zacarias Bonnat won a silver medal in men's weightlifting (81 kg). Crismery Santana won a bronze medal in women's weightlifting (87 kg), making her the first Dominican woman to win an Olympic medal. In athletics, Lidio Andrés Feliz, Marileidy Paulino, Anabel Medina, and Alexander Ogando won a silver medal in the mixed 4x400 meters relay. Marileidy Paulino also won a silver medal in the women's 400 meters event. She was the first woman from the Dominican Republic to win an individual Olympic medal in athletics. The Dominican baseball team also won a bronze medal at the baseball event. Even though they won many medals, they did not get any gold medals in 2020.

The athletes are represented by the Dominican Republic Olympic Committee.
