Dune (also known as Dune: Part One) is an exciting science fiction film from 2021. It was directed by Denis Villeneuve. This movie is the first part of a two-movie series based on the famous 1965 book called Dune by Frank Herbert. It mostly covers the first half of the book's story.

The film takes place far in the future. It follows a young man named Paul Atreides. His family, the noble House Atreides, gets caught in a big war. This war is all about a dangerous desert planet called Arrakis. The movie has many well-known actors, including Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa.

Making the Movie: Dune's Journey to the Big Screen

Dune is not the first time this story has been made into a movie. Before this 2021 film, there was a 1984 movie directed by David Lynch. There was also a TV mini-series in 2000. The 1984 movie wasn't very popular.

After some tries by other studios, Legendary Entertainment got the rights to make Dune movies and TV shows in 2016. Denis Villeneuve joined as the director in February 2017. They decided to make the first movie first. If it did well, they would then make a second one.

Filming Locations and Schedule

Filming for Dune happened from March to July 2019. The movie was shot in several different places around the world. These locations included Budapest in Hungary, Jordan, Norway, and Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. These places helped create the amazing look of the desert planet Arrakis.

Release and Success of Dune

Dune was first planned to come out in late 2020. However, it was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The movie finally premiered at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021. It then came out in other countries starting September 15, 2021. In the United States, it was released in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.

What Critics and Audiences Thought

The movie got a lot of praise from critics. People especially loved the music by Hans Zimmer, the amazing visuals, and the new ways they used technology to make the film. Many felt it was more true to the original book than the 1984 movie.

Dune was also a big success at the box office. It earned over $400 million around the world. The movie cost about $165 million to make.

Awards and Recognition

Dune was named one of the top 10 films of 2021 by groups like the National Board of Review. It also received many awards and nominations. At the 94th Academy Awards (also known as the Oscars), Dune was nominated for 10 awards, including Best Picture. It won the most awards that night, taking home six Oscars:

What's Next for Dune?
