The FIFA Puskás Award is a special prize given by FIFA, the world's football governing body. It was created on October 20, 2009, by the then-president, Sepp Blatter. This award celebrates the most beautiful or amazing goal scored by a male or female player during the year. People vote for their favorite goal, and experts also help decide the winner.
The award is named after Ferenc Puskás, a legendary football player from Hungary. He played for Real Madrid in the late 1950s and 1960s and was a key member of Hungary's famous "Golden Team". Many people believe Puskás was one of the best and most powerful goal scorers in European football history. Puskás scored an incredible 806 goals in 793 games. He also scored 86 goals for his national team in 90 matches, which was a world record at the time.
Sepp Blatter said that it's important to remember great football players like Ferenc Puskás who made a big impact on the sport. He added that Puskás was not only a very talented player but also a wonderful person. FIFA was happy to honor him by naming this award after him.
Until 2018, fans decided the winner by voting on FIFA's website. But after some arguments in 2018, FIFA changed the rules. Now, football experts chosen by FIFA pick the winner from the top three goals that the public voted for.
The first award covered goals scored from July 2008 to July 2009. It was given out for the first time on December 21, 2009, in Switzerland. The first player to win the award was Cristiano Ronaldo from Portugal.
How Goals Are Chosen for the Award
To be considered for the Puskás Award, a goal must meet certain rules:
- It should be a truly amazing goal. This can include long-range shots, goals from teamwork, rabona kicks, overhead kicks, or amazing individual plays.
- The goal can be scored by any player, no matter their league, gender, or country.
- The goal should not be lucky. It shouldn't be caused by mistakes, deflections from other players, or if the player was in an offside position.
- The player must have shown good sportsmanship in the game. They should not have behaved badly or been accused of things like doping.
- A player can only be nominated with one goal each year.
