Federico Chiesa (born October 25, 1997) is a professional football player from Italy. He plays as a winger for the Liverpool club and for the Italian national team.

Federico is the son of Enrico Chiesa, who was also a professional footballer. Federico started his career in the youth academy of Fiorentina. He made his first team debut in 2016. He played for Fiorentina for four years. During this time, he scored 34 goals in 153 games.

In the 2020–21 season, Chiesa moved to Juventus. He won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana in his first season there. He won another Coppa Italia in 2024. After that, he joined the English club Liverpool. He won the Premier League title with Liverpool in his first season.

Chiesa first played for the Italian national team in March 2018. He helped Italy win the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. He was also named in the Team of the Tournament for his great performance.

Club Career

Chiesa began playing football at a young age. He started his youth career with a team called Settignanese. This team was from Settignano, a town near Florence. A famous Fiorentina player, Kurt Hamrin, coached him there.

Playing for Fiorentina

Chiesa joined Fiorentina in 2007. He first played for their youth teams. For the 2014–15 season, he joined the under-19 squad. He scored one goal in seven games for their youth team. The next season, he played 23 games and scored seven goals. Chiesa signed his first professional contract with Fiorentina in February 2016.

Chiesa played his first official game for Fiorentina in August 2016. It was an away game against Juventus, and Fiorentina lost 2–1. On September 29, he played his first UEFA Europa League game. Fiorentina won 5–1 against Qarabağ. On December 8, he scored his first senior goal in the Europa League. It was in a 2–1 away win against Qarabağ. However, he was later sent off (given a red card) in the same match.

On January 15, 2017, Chiesa seemed to score the winning goal against Juventus. But the goal was later given to his teammate, Milan Badelj. Later that month, Chiesa signed a new contract with Fiorentina until June 2021. On January 21, he scored his first goal in Serie A (Italy's top league). Fiorentina won 3–0 against Chievo. Just eight days later, he scored his second league goal in a 3–3 draw against Genoa.

In the 2017–18 season, Chiesa scored a goal in his 30th league game for Fiorentina. It was against Bologna, and Fiorentina won 2–1. On January 30, 2019, during the 2018–19 season, Chiesa scored three goals in one game (a hat-trick). This happened in a 7–1 home win against Roma in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

Playing for Juventus

On October 5, 2020, Chiesa joined Juventus on a two-year loan deal. He made his debut for Juventus on October 17. He gave an assist for a goal but also received a red card in a 1–1 draw against Crotone. Three days later, he played his first UEFA Champions League game. Juventus won 2–0 against Dynamo Kyiv. Chiesa scored his first Champions League goal for Juventus on December 2. It was in a 3–0 home win against the same team.

Chiesa's first league goal for Juventus came on December 16. He scored a long-distance goal in a 1–1 draw against Atalanta. On January 6, 2021, Chiesa scored two goals against Milan. This helped Juventus win 3–1 away from home. It was Milan's first league defeat in 27 games. He scored three goals against Porto in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League round of 16. Juventus was eliminated from the competition by the away goals rule. On May 19, Chiesa scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Atalanta in the 2021 Coppa Italia final.

At the start of the new season, on September 29, 2021, Chiesa scored the winning goal in a 1–0 home win against Chelsea in a Champions League group stage match. This made him equal Alessandro Del Piero's record of four goals in a row in the competition. On January 9, 2022, during a game against Roma, he got a serious knee injury. This injury kept him out of action for seven months. Chiesa finished his season early with four goals in 18 games.

On November 2, 2022, Chiesa returned to play after almost ten months. He came on as a substitute in a 2–1 home loss against Paris Saint-Germain. In the 2023–24 season, he scored nine goals in 33 games in Serie A. This was his best personal record for goals in a league season.

Playing for Liverpool

On August 29, 2024, Chiesa moved to the Premier League to play for Liverpool. He signed a long-term contract. He made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in a Champions League game against Milan. Liverpool won that game 3–1. On September 25, Chiesa started his first game for Liverpool. He provided an assist in a 5–1 win against West Ham United in the EFL Cup.

On January 11, 2025, Chiesa scored his first goal for Liverpool. It was in a 4–0 home win against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup. On March 16, he scored late in the EFL Cup final against Newcastle United. However, Liverpool lost the final 2–1. In his first season in England, Chiesa did not play many minutes under manager Arne Slot.

Despite playing limited minutes in the Premier League, Chiesa made his fifth league appearance on May 4, 2025. This happened in a 3–1 loss against Chelsea. This appearance meant he qualified for a winner's medal. He became only the second Italian player to receive a Premier League winner's medal. The first was Mario Balotelli in the 2011–12 season.

International Career

Chiesa was first called up to the Italy U19 squad in 2015. He played in friendly games against teams like the Czech Republic and Spain. In 2016, he was called up to the U20 team. He played in the 2015–16 Under-20 Four Nations Tournament.

In March 2017, Chiesa joined the U21 team. He made his U21 debut on March 23, 2017, in a 2–1 win against Poland. He helped set up the first goal in that game. In June 2017, Chiesa was part of the U21 squad for the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. In Italy's first game, he helped set up a goal in a 2–0 win over Denmark. Italy was knocked out by Spain in the semi-finals.

Chiesa also played for the U21 team in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. This tournament was held in Italy. He scored three goals during the group stage.

Senior National Team

Even though he had only just joined the U21 team, Chiesa was chosen for an unofficial friendly game for the senior Italy team in May 2017. He made his unofficial debut in this game. Italy won 8–0 against San Marino.

In March 2018, Chiesa received his first official call-up to the Italy national team. He made his official senior international debut on March 23 in a friendly game against Argentina. Italy lost that game 2–0.

Chiesa scored his first goal for the senior national team on November 18, 2019. It was in a big 9–1 home win over Armenia. This was Italy's last game in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. He also helped set up two other goals in that match.

In June 2021, Chiesa was part of Italy's team for UEFA Euro 2020. He was named the best player (Man of the Match) by UEFA in Italy's final group game. Italy won 1–0 against Wales. On June 26, he scored the first goal in a 2–1 extra-time win against Austria. This was in the round of 16 at Wembley Stadium. His father, Enrico, had also scored in a Euro tournament 25 years earlier. This made them the first father and son to score goals at the Euros.

In the semi-final against Spain on July 6, Chiesa scored the first goal. The game ended 1–1, and Italy won after a penalty shoot-out. Chiesa was again named Man of the Match. On July 11, he got an injury late in the UEFA Euro 2020 Final against England at Wembley Stadium. Italy went on to win the European Championship after a penalty shoot-out. Chiesa was chosen for the "Team of the Tournament" for his great performances.

UEFA Nations League

On October 6, 2021, Chiesa assisted a goal in a 2–1 home loss to Spain. This was in the semi-finals of the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League. On October 10, he helped Italy win a penalty. This led to the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Belgium. This game was for the bronze medal in the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals.

Euro 2024

Chiesa was part of the team for the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament. He started in three of Italy's four games. Italy was knocked out in the round of 16.

Chiesa is a very talented football player. He is fast, skillful, and works very hard. He has good technique and is not very tall. He has good energy, can speed up quickly, and is good at dribbling the ball.

He usually plays as a left winger. This position allows him to move inside and create chances for his teammates. He can also shoot well with his stronger right foot. However, he can also shoot accurately with his left foot. He can play effectively on the right wing too.
