Federico Chiesa (born 25 October 1997) is a professional footballer from Italy. He plays as a left winger or forward. Federico currently plays for the English club Liverpool and the Italy national team.

Federico is the son of Enrico Chiesa, who was also a professional footballer. Federico started his career in the youth academy of Fiorentina. He made his first team debut in 2016. He played for Fiorentina for four years, scoring 34 goals in 153 games. In the 2020–21 season, Chiesa moved to Juventus. There, he won the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana in his first year. In 2024, Chiesa joined Liverpool in England.

For his country, Chiesa first played for the Italian national team in March 2018. He helped Italy win the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. He was also chosen for the Team of the Tournament.

Club Career

Federico Chiesa began playing football at a young age. He started his youth career with a team called Settignanese. This club was in Settignano, a small town near Florence. A famous Fiorentina player, Kurt Hamrin, coached him there.

Fiorentina

Chiesa joined Fiorentina in 2007. He first played for their youth teams. By the 2014–15 season, he was part of the under-19 squad. He scored one goal in seven games for their Primavera (youth) team. The next season, he played 23 games and scored seven goals. Chiesa signed his first professional contract with Fiorentina in February 2016.

He played his first official game for Fiorentina in 2016. This was against Juventus in the 2016–17 Serie A season. Fiorentina lost the game 2–1. On 29 September, Chiesa played his first UEFA Europa League match. Fiorentina won 5–1 against Qarabağ. On 8 December, he scored his first senior goal in a 2–1 win against Qarabağ. He was later sent off in the same match.

On 15 January 2017, Chiesa seemed to score the winning goal against Juventus. However, the goal was given to his teammate Milan Badelj. Later that month, Chiesa signed a new contract with Fiorentina until 2021. On 21 January, he scored his first goal in Serie A against Chievo. Eight days later, he scored his second league goal against Genoa. On 7 May, he scored the first goal for Fiorentina in a 2–2 draw against Sassuolo.

On 16 September 2017, Chiesa scored in his 30th league game for Fiorentina. This was against Bologna, and Fiorentina won 2–1. On 30 January 2019, Chiesa scored three goals in one game (a hat-trick). This was in a 7–1 win against Roma in the Coppa Italia quarter-final.

Juventus

On 5 October 2020, Chiesa joined Juventus on a two-year loan. Juventus had an option to buy him permanently. On 17 October, Chiesa played his first game for Juventus. He gave an assist to Álvaro Morata but also received a red card. Three days later, he made his UEFA Champions League debut. He scored his first Champions League goal for Juventus on 2 December. This was in a 3–0 win against Dynamo Kyiv.

His first league goal for Juventus came on 16 December. He scored a long-range goal in a 1–1 draw against Atalanta. On 6 January 2021, Chiesa scored two goals against Milan. This helped Juventus win 3–1 away from home. It was Milan's first league loss in 27 games. He scored three goals against Porto in the 2020–21 UEFA Champions League round of 16. However, Juventus was knocked out of the competition. On 19 May, Chiesa scored the winning goal in a 2–1 victory over Atalanta. This was in the 2021 Coppa Italia final.

At the start of the new season, on 29 September 2021, Chiesa scored the winning goal. This was in a 1–0 home win against Chelsea in the 2021–22 UEFA Champions League. On 9 January 2022, he suffered a serious knee injury (an anterior cruciate ligament injury) during a match against Roma. This injury kept him out of play for seven months. Chiesa finished that season with four goals in 18 games.

On 2 November 2022, Chiesa returned to play after his injury. He came on as a substitute in a 2–1 loss against Paris Saint-Germain. In the 2023–24 season, he scored nine goals in 33 league games. This was his best goal-scoring season so far.

Liverpool

On 29 August 2024, Chiesa moved to the Premier League to play for Liverpool. He signed a long-term contract. He made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in a UEFA Champions League game against AC Milan. Liverpool won that game 3–1. Chiesa made his first assist for Liverpool on 25 September. This was in an EFL Cup match against West Ham United. He assisted Diogo Jota's goal.

On 11 January 2025, Chiesa scored his first goal for Liverpool. This was in a 4–0 home win against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.

International Career

Youth Teams

Chiesa was first called up to the Italy U19 squad in 2015. He played in friendly matches against the Czech Republic, Spain, and France. In 2016, he was called up to the U20 team. He played for them in the 2015–16 Under-20 Four Nations Tournament.

In March 2017, Chiesa joined the U21 team. He played his U21 debut on 23 March 2017, in a 2–1 win against Poland. He helped set up the first goal in that game. In June 2017, he was part of the U21 squad for the 2017 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Italy reached the semi-finals but lost to Spain. He also played in the 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship in Italy, scoring three goals.

Senior Team

Early Matches

Even though he was still playing for the U21 team, Chiesa was called up to the senior Italy squad in May 2017. He played in an unofficial friendly game against San Marino. Italy won that match 8–0.

In March 2018, Chiesa received his first official call-up to the Italy national team. He made his official senior international debut on 23 March. This was in a friendly game against Argentina, which Italy lost 2–0.

His first goal for the senior national team came on 18 November 2019. This was in a big 9–1 home win over Armenia. This game was a qualifier for UEFA Euro 2020. He also helped set up two other goals in that match.

Euro 2020 Success

In June 2021, Chiesa was part of Italy's squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He was named "Man of the Match" by UEFA in Italy's final group game. Italy won 1–0 against Wales. On 26 June, he scored the first goal in a 2–1 extra-time win against Austria. This was in the round of 16 at Wembley Stadium. His father, Enrico, had also scored in a Euro tournament 25 years earlier. They became the first father and son to score at the Euros.

In the semi-final against Spain on 6 July, he scored the opening goal. The game ended 1–1, and Italy won after a penalty shootout (4–2). Chiesa was again named "Man of the Match" for his great performance. In the UEFA Euro 2020 Final against England on 11 July, Chiesa got injured. Italy went on to win the European Championship after a penalty shootout. Because of his excellent play throughout the tournament, he was chosen for the "Team of the Tournament".

Nations League Finals

On 6 October 2021, Chiesa assisted a goal in a 2–1 loss to Spain. This was in the semi-finals of the 2020–21 UEFA Nations League. On 10 October, he helped Italy win a penalty. This led to Italy beating Belgium 2–1. This win secured third place for Italy in the 2021 UEFA Nations League Finals. He also helped Italy secure third place in the 2023 UEFA Nations League Finals.

Federico Chiesa is a very talented football player. He is known for being fast, skillful, and hardworking. He has good technique and is quick. He usually plays as a winger on the left side. From this position, he can cut inside and shoot with his stronger right foot. He can also shoot well with his left foot. He is also good at playing on the right wing.
