What is Florida's Turnpike?
Florida's Turnpike is a long highway that helps people travel across the state. It was first called the Sunshine State Parkway. It is a major route for cars and trucks. The road is managed by Florida's Turnpike Enterprise.
Main Sections of the Turnpike
The Turnpike is made of two main parts. These parts help connect different areas of Florida.
The Mainline
The first part is called the Mainline. It is about 265 miles (426 km) long. This section goes from the Golden Glades Interchange (which is north of Miami) all the way to Wildwood. It has a secret name, State Road 91 (SR 91). This part of the road was built in different stages between 1957 and 1964.
The Homestead Extension
The second part is the Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike (HEFT). This section is about 48 miles (77 km) long. It was finished in 1974. The HEFT starts in Florida City, near Homestead. It goes through the suburbs west and north of Miami. It connects to the Mainline about four miles (6 km) north of the Golden Glades Interchange. Its secret name is State Road 821 (SR 821).
Why is the Turnpike Important?
Florida's Turnpike is one of the busiest highways in the United States. It is known as the third most used toll road in the country. This means many people use it every day to get where they need to go. It helps connect many cities and towns across Florida.
