Garifuna Americans are people in the United States who have Garifuna heritage. They are descendants of a unique group of people called the Garifuna. The Garifuna are a mix of African people and native people from the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Many Garifuna Americans trace their family history to Central America. Their ancestors were forced to leave Saint Vincent and settled in countries like Honduras, Guatemala, Belize, and Nicaragua. Other Garifuna Americans have ancestors who stayed on the island of Saint Vincent. The Garifuna people originally came from a blend of Arawak, Kalinago (also known as Island Carib), and Afro-Caribbean people who lived on Saint Vincent.
