History of Grace
The land where Grace now stands was once home to the Shoshone Native American people. The famous Oregon Trail, a path used by pioneers heading west, passed very close to Grace. The town of Grace itself was officially started in 1894 when it got its own post office.
Unlike some other towns nearby, Grace was not first settled by Mormon pioneers. However, over time, it became a town where many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints live. The economy in Grace has always been focused on farming. Important crops and activities include potatoes, alfalfa, grain, dairy farming, and ranching.
Geography and Climate
Where Grace is Located
Grace is a city in Idaho. It covers an area of about 0.99 square miles (2.48 square kilometers), and all of this area is land.
The city is one of the northernmost towns along the Wasatch Range, a long mountain range. It is also very close to a large fault line that helps define these mountains. Grace is found in the middle of an area called Gem Valley.
Valley Formation
The valley floor around Grace is very flat. This is different from the mountains nearby. This flatness was caused by volcanic activity about 30,000 years ago. A large lava flow from these volcanoes changed the path of the Bear River. Before this, the river flowed towards the Pacific Ocean. After the lava flow, it started flowing into the Great Basin. This change helped create a huge ancient lake called Lake Bonneville. The Great Salt Lake we see today is what's left of Lake Bonneville.
Lake Bonneville reached its farthest point north about four miles (6 km) southwest of Grace. The Bear River now flows north and west of Grace and ends in the Great Salt Lake.
