History of Guffey
Guffey was once called Freshwater. It was a busy center for mining, where people dug for minerals like copper, lead, zinc, and mica. They even found small amounts of gold and silver.
The town was most active between 1895 and 1902. During this time, over 500 people lived there, and it had about 40 businesses. Besides mining, people also raised cattle and worked with lumber. Guffey was also famous for its fun dances and talented fiddlers.
Today, Guffey has an unofficial mayor: a cat named "Monster"! The town used to have a unique tradition called the "Fourth of July Chicken Fly." For 26 years, small chickens were released from a special mailbox on a high platform. Prizes were given to the chickens that flew the farthest. This tradition ended in 2016.

Geology and Rocks Around Guffey
The area around Guffey has very old rocks from two different periods in Earth's history. Some rocks are from the Precambrian era, which are over a billion years old. These include igneous rocks (formed from cooled magma) and metamorphic rocks (changed by heat and pressure). These old rocks contain small amounts of valuable minerals.
Other rocks are much younger, from the Paleogene period. These rocks were formed about 34 million years ago by the Guffey volcanic center. This volcanic activity is linked to the amazing fossil discoveries at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
The Guffey Meteorite
In 1907, two cowboys found a huge meteorite near Guffey. A meteorite is a piece of rock or metal from space that falls to Earth. This one weighed about 309 kilograms (681 pounds)! It is still the largest meteorite ever found in Colorado.
Scientists classify it as an "ungrouped iron meteorite" because it's mostly iron and has a lot of nickel. Most of this giant space rock is kept at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Denver Museum of Nature and Science also has a piece of it. Unfortunately, you can't see any parts of it in Guffey itself.
