"Happy" is a super popular song from 2013 by the American singer and producer Pharrell Williams. It was first released as part of the soundtrack for the animated movie Despicable Me 2.

This song was also included on the album Despicable Me 2: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. "Happy" was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. It even reached number one on the music charts in Ireland.

Creating the Song "Happy"

"Happy" was both written and produced by Pharrell Williams. He is the main singer you hear throughout the song. Other singers, like Rhea Dummett, Trevon Henderson, Shamika Hightower, Ashley L. Lee, Jasmine Murray, and Terrence Rolle, provided the background vocals.

The song was recorded in 2013 at Circle House Studios in Miami, Florida. Later, it was mixed at Music Box Studios in Atlanta, Georgia. "Happy" is 3 minutes and 53 seconds long. It has a fast beat, with 160 beats per minute.

How "Happy" Topped the Charts

Even before its official release in November 2013, "Happy" became very popular. In October 2013, it hit number one on the Dutch Top 40 chart in the Netherlands. This happened because radio stations played it a lot and many people downloaded it online. It was also used in a commercial.

"Happy" reached the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart on March 1, 2014. This was the fourth song featuring Pharrell Williams to reach number one on this chart. However, it was the very first time he was the main singer on a number-one hit. By March 2014, over 3 million copies of the song had been sold in the United States.

In the United Kingdom, "Happy" started outside the top 70 on the UK Singles Chart in December 2013. But it quickly climbed to the number-one spot by December 29. This made it the third song featuring Pharrell Williams to hit number one in the UK in 2013. He was the first artist since 2009 to have three number-one singles in one year there!

The song also became a huge hit in Australia. It reached number one on the ARIA Singles Chart on January 6, 2014. It stayed at the top for 12 weeks, though not all in a row.

In New Zealand, "Happy" also reached number one on the NZ Top 40 Singles Chart on January 6, 2014. It stayed at the top for an amazing 15 non-stop weeks. On April 28, 2014, after its 15th week at number one, it became the song that had spent the most weeks at the top of that chart in its history!

"Happy" was a global success, reaching number one in many other countries too. These include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and Venezuela.
