Hayley Westenra's Early Life
Hayley Westenra was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, on 10 April 1987. Her parents are Gerald and Jill Westenra. Her grandmother, Shirley Ireland, was also a singer, and her grandfather played the piano. Hayley has family roots from Ireland, the Netherlands, and England.
She started performing at just six years old in a Christmas play at her school. A teacher noticed her perfect singing voice and encouraged her to learn music. Soon, Hayley learned to read music and play the violin, piano, guitar, and recorder. She also took singing lessons and loved musical theatre. By age 11, she had performed on stage more than 40 times! She even played male characters sometimes. Hayley attended Cobham Intermediate School, where a building was later named after her.
Hayley Westenra's Music Career
Starting Her Music Journey (2000–2002)
When Hayley was 12, she went into a recording studio to make a demo album called Walking in the Air. She made 70 copies for friends and family, but soon made 1000 more! A journalist from Canterbury Television saw her and asked her to appear on TV. A concert promoter named Gray Bartlett saw the show and offered her a recording deal with Universal Records New Zealand.
With Universal Records, Hayley released her first album, Hayley Westenra, which featured songs from shows and light classical music. She also released My Gift to You, an album of Christmas songs. Because her albums were so successful, she was able to take lessons from the famous singer Malvina Major.
Worldwide Success with Pure (2003–2004)
Hayley became famous worldwide when she signed with Decca Records. She recorded Pure, an album with classical, pop, and traditional Māori songs. Pure quickly became the fastest-selling international debut album in the UK classical music charts. It sold over 19,000 copies in its first week and reached number one in the UK. So far, over two million copies of Pure have been sold. In New Zealand, Pure has sold so many copies that it is certified 12 times platinum. This makes Hayley the best-selling artist in her country's history.
In 2004, Hayley sang the end-title song for the Disney movie Mulan II. She also joined the Radio Disney music education tour for middle school students. Later that year, she sang "Bridal Ballad" for the movie The Merchant of Venice.
