Hermance is a charming town, also known as a municipality, located in the Canton of Geneva, Switzerland. It's a lovely place to visit, right on the shores of Lake Geneva.

History of Hermance

Hermance has a long history! It was first mentioned way back in 1247. Back then, it was called intra Armentia. Later, in 1271, people referred to it as Eremencia.

Hermance covers an area of about 1.44 square kilometers (which is about 0.56 square miles). A big part of this land, about 57.6%, is used for farming. Imagine fields and farms stretching out!

About 13.2% of Hermance is covered by forests, providing green spaces and homes for wildlife. The town itself, with its buildings and roads, takes up about 29.2% of the land.

You'll also find a small part of Hermance, about 1.4%, covered by rivers or lakes. The town is located right on the left bank of Lake Geneva, which is a very famous and beautiful lake.

Hermance is made up of a few smaller areas or villages. These include Hermance - Rives-du-Lac, Le Bourg, and La Croix-de-Bally.

Hermance has been home to some interesting and important people!

  • Pierre-Joseph Ravel (1832–1908): He was a Swiss engineer and inventor. He was also the father of the famous composer, Maurice Ravel. Pierre-Joseph spent the last two years of his life in Hermance.
  • Adriaan Pelt (1892 – 1981): A journalist and diplomat from the Netherlands. He is well-known for helping to write the constitution for Libya after World War II.
  • André Roch (1906 – 2002): A mountaineer, avalanche expert, skier, and engineer. He was also an author!
  • Bernard Vifian (1944 – 2012): A Swiss professional cyclist. He was the Swiss National Road Race champion in 1969.

The school system in Geneva, where Hermance is located, is well-structured. Young children can attend two years of non-required Kindergarten. After that, students go to six years of primary school.

For older students, there are three years of required lower secondary school, followed by three to five years of optional, more advanced schools.
