Holger Badstuber's Club Career
Playing for Bayern Munich
Starting Out: Youth and First Team Debut
Holger Badstuber joined the youth teams at Bayern Munich in 2002. He played there until 2007. Before joining the main team, he played for Bayern's reserve team. He scored goals in the lower leagues. In July 2009, he signed his first professional contract.
He played his first game in the top German league, the Bundesliga, in August 2009. This was against 1899 Hoffenheim. He quickly became a regular player in defense. On December 4, 2009, he scored his first goal for the main team. It was a powerful free kick against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Even though he was a central defender, he often played as a left-back. He impressed everyone in his first season. He played in all league games during the 2009–10 season.
In February 2010, Bayern Munich gave him a new contract. It kept him at the club until 2014. He played 49 games in the 2009–10 season and scored one goal.
Playing Years: 2010 to 2012
During the 2010–11 season, Holger played 32 games for Bayern. He had some ups and downs with his coach, Louis van Gaal. Sometimes he was criticized for his play. But when Jupp Heynckes became coach, Holger played better. He formed a strong partnership with Jérôme Boateng in central defense. They helped Bayern keep many clean sheets (games without letting in a goal).
He was a key part of the defense that helped Bayern reach the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final. They beat strong teams like Real Madrid and Manchester City. However, they lost the final to Chelsea. He played 50 games in the 2011–12 season.
Injuries and Comebacks: 2013 to 2015
In February 2013, Holger signed a new contract with Bayern until 2017. But his career was hit by serious injuries. On December 1, 2012, he tore a major knee ligament. He re-injured it in May 2013. This meant he missed the entire 2013–14 season. He had played 18 games before his injury in the 2012–13 season.
He returned to training in May 2014. His first game back was a friendly match on July 18, 2014. It had been 594 days since his injury!
He started the 2014–15 season well, playing in the first three league games. But then he got a thigh injury in September. This kept him out for the rest of that year. He came back in February 2015. He scored a goal in a Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk in March 2015. This was his first goal since 2009. Sadly, in April 2015, he tore a muscle in his leg. This injury ended his season early. He played 16 games in the 2014–15 season and 9 games in the 2015–16 season.
Loan to Schalke 04
In January 2017, Holger joined Schalke 04 on loan. This was until the end of the 2016–17 season. He had only played a few games for Bayern that season before his loan.
He played his first game for Schalke against his parent club, Bayern, in February 2017. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. In March 2017, he was sent off (given a red card) in a cup game against Bayern. Schalke announced in May 2017 that they would not sign him permanently. Bayern also said his contract would end after his loan.
Playing for VfB Stuttgart
A few weeks after leaving Bayern Munich, Holger returned to VfB Stuttgart in August 2017. He had played for Stuttgart as a teenager. He joined them for free. He played 28 games and scored two goals in the 2017–18 season.
In July 2018, he extended his contract with Stuttgart until June 2021.
Playing for FC Luzern
On July 12, 2021, Holger signed with the Swiss club FC Luzern. However, in December 2021, he and the club agreed to end his contract early.
Retirement from Football
On September 5, 2022, Holger Badstuber announced that he was retiring from professional football. He had played almost 200 games in the top two German leagues and the Swiss top league.
Holger Badstuber's International Career
Playing in the 2010 World Cup
Holger was first called up to the German national team for the 2010 World Cup squad. He made his first appearance in a warm-up game against Hungary in May. He started his first game against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
He was chosen for Germany's 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa. He wore the number 14 shirt. He started Germany's first group game against Australia. He played the full 90 minutes at left-back. Germany won that game 4–0. This was only his third game for Germany. He also started the next group game against Serbia. However, he was criticized for his performance. He lost his left-back spot to Jérôme Boateng for the rest of the tournament. The 1–0 loss to Serbia was the only game Holger played where Germany lost.
Playing in Euro 2012
After the World Cup, Holger played much better. He became a regular starting defender for Germany's coach, Joachim Löw. He helped Germany win all ten of their qualifying games for Euro 2012. He played in nine of these ten games.
During the qualification, Holger scored his first goal for Germany. It was the fifth goal in a 6–1 win against Azerbaijan. He headed in a corner kick from Mesut Özil. In a friendly game against Ukraine in November 2011, Holger was the only central defender. This showed how important he had become to Germany's defense. Holger started Germany's first game in Euro 2012. He helped the team keep a clean sheet in a 1–0 win against Portugal.
Because of his serious injury in December 2012, Holger was not chosen for the 2014 World Cup squad.
Euro 2016 Qualifiers
On March 19, 2015, Holger was called up to the national team again. This was for a friendly game against Australia and a Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia. He played against Australia on March 25, 2015. This was his first international game since his injury. He had last played for Germany in a 4–4 draw against Sweden. Holger did not travel to Georgia for the qualifier due to a hip injury. He was later not included in the Euro 2016 squad. The match against Australia became his final international game.
