*Club domestic league appearances and goals |
Holger Felix Badstuber (born on March 13, 1989) is a German former professional footballer. He mostly played as a centre-back (a defender in the middle).
Holger Badstuber started playing for Bayern Munich in the top German league, the Bundesliga, when he was 19 years old. This was during the 2009–10 season. He played in almost every game that year. He helped his team win both the league title and the German Cup. They also reached the final of the UEFA Champions League that same year.
Because of his great performance, he was chosen to play for the German national team. He played in the World Cup in 2010 and later in the Euro 2012. He played more than 30 games for Germany. His former coach, Louis van Gaal, even said in 2010 that Holger was the best left-footed defender in Germany.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at Bayern Munich
Youth Teams and First Games
Holger Badstuber joined the youth teams at Bayern Munich in 2002. He played there until 2007. After that, he played for Bayern's reserve team, Bayern Munich II.
In July 2009, he signed his first professional contract. He played his first game in the Bundesliga for the main Bayern team in the 2009–10 season. This was against 1899 Hoffenheim. He quickly became a regular player in the defense.
On December 4, 2009, he scored his first goal for the senior team. It was a powerful free kick against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Even though he was usually a centre-back, he often played as a left-back. He did very well in his first season. On February 4, 2010, Bayern Munich gave him a new contract until 2014.
Playing in 2010–2012
In the 2010–11 season, Holger played 32 games for Bayern. He had some ups and downs with his coach, Louis van Gaal. But when Jupp Heynckes became the coach, Holger played as a central defender again. He worked well with Jérôme Boateng. They helped Bayern keep many clean sheets (games where the opponent doesn't score).
Holger was also a key part of the defense that helped Bayern reach the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final. They beat strong teams like Real Madrid and Manchester City. However, they lost to Chelsea in the final. He played 50 games in total during the 2011–12 season.
Injuries and Comebacks (2013–2015)
On February 3, 2013, Holger signed another contract extension with Bayern, keeping him until 2017. However, he faced a tough time with injuries.
He seriously injured his knee (anterior cruciate ligament) on December 1, 2012, against Borussia Dortmund. He re-injured it on May 19, 2013. This meant he missed the entire 2013–14 season. He had played 18 games before his injury in the 2012–13 season.
Holger returned to training on May 5, 2014. He played his first game after the injury on July 18, 2014. It was a friendly match against FC Memmingen, which Bayern won 3–0. It had been 594 days since his injury.
He started the 2014–15 season well, playing in the first three Bundesliga games. But then, he got a thigh injury on September 13 against VfB Stuttgart. This kept him out for the rest of that year.
He came back on February 14, 2015, in an 8–0 win against Hamburger SV. He became a regular player again under coach Pep Guardiola. On March 11, 2015, Holger scored a goal in a Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk. Bayern won 7–0. This was his first goal since December 2009.
Unfortunately, on April 23, 2015, he injured his quadriceps muscle during a Champions League game against Porto. This injury ended his season. He played 16 games in the 2014–15 season. In the 2015–16 season, he played nine games.
Loan to Schalke 04
On January 10, 2017, Holger Badstuber joined Schalke 04 on loan. He stayed there until the end of the 2016–17 season. Before this loan, he had only played a few games for Bayern in that season.
He played his first game for Schalke on February 4, 2017, against his parent club, Bayern. The game ended in a 1–1 draw. On March 1, 2017, he was sent off (given a red card) in a German Cup game against Bayern. Schalke lost 3–0.
On May 11, 2017, Schalke announced they would not sign him permanently. The next day, Bayern Munich also said that his contract would end after his loan spell.
Playing for VfB Stuttgart
On August 4, 2017, Holger Badstuber returned to VfB Stuttgart. This was the club he played for as a teenager. He joined them for free after leaving Bayern Munich. He scored two goals in 28 games during the 2017–18 season.
On July 10, 2018, he extended his contract with Stuttgart until June 2021.
Time at FC Luzern
On July 12, 2021, Holger signed with the Swiss club FC Luzern. However, on December 16, 2021, he and the club agreed to end his contract early.
Retirement from Football
On September 5, 2022, Holger Badstuber announced that he was retiring from professional football. He played almost 200 matches in the top two German leagues and the Swiss top league during his career.
International Career for Germany
2010 World Cup Experience
Holger was first called up to the German senior team for the 2010 World Cup squad. He played his first game for Germany on May 29, 2010, against Hungary. He came on as a substitute. He started his first game for Germany against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
On June 1, he was chosen for Germany's 23-man squad for the World Cup in South Africa. He wore the number 14 shirt. He started in Germany's first group game against Australia. He played the whole game at left-back and helped Germany win 4–0. This was only his third game for Germany.
He also started the next group game against Serbia on June 18, 2010. He played 77 minutes before being replaced. He was criticized for his performance in that game. He then lost his left-back spot to Jérôme Boateng for the rest of the tournament. The 1–0 loss to Serbia was the only game Holger played where Germany lost.
Euro 2012 and Beyond
After the World Cup, Holger improved his game and became a regular defender for Germany. He helped Germany win all ten of their qualification matches for Euro 2012. He played in nine of these ten games.
During the qualification, Holger scored his first goal for Germany. It was the fifth goal in a 6–1 win against Azerbaijan. He headed in a corner kick from Mesut Özil.
In a friendly game against Ukraine on November 11, 2011, Holger was the only central defender in an experimental formation. This showed how important he had become to Germany's defense. Holger started Germany's first game in Euro 2012. He helped the team keep a clean sheet in a 1–0 win against Portugal.
Because of his serious injury in December 2012, Holger was not chosen for the 2014 World Cup squad.
On March 19, 2015, Holger was called up to the national team again. This was for a friendly match against Australia and a Euro 2016 qualifier against Georgia. He played against Australia on March 25, 2015. This was his first international game since his injury. He had last played in a 4–4 draw against Sweden. Holger did not go to Georgia for the qualifier because of a hip problem. He was later not included in the Euro 2016 squad. The match against Australia became his final international game.
