Early Life and First Steps in Music
Iveta Mukuchyan was born on October 14, 1986, in Yerevan, Armenia. In 1992, her family moved to Germany. Life was not always easy, and the family moved back to Armenia in 1995, but returned to Germany because of the difficult times in the country.
From 1998 to 2006, she went to the Sankt-Ansgar-Schule, a Catholic school in Hamburg. Her father was very proud of his Armenian heritage and wanted his children to speak Armenian at home.
Iveta discovered her love for singing after performing Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On" at a school event. Her parents saw her talent and encouraged her to become a singer. She later decided to leave her design studies in Germany to study music at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory in Armenia. Her sister, Marianna, is a well-known stylist.
Career
2009–2014: Rise to Fame
In 2009, Iveta joined the fourth season of Hay Superstar, which is the Armenian version of the popular show Pop Idol. She finished in fifth place and quickly became a new star in Armenia. She even won a "Discovery of the Year" award.
In 2012, she took her talent to Germany and competed in the second season of The Voice of Germany. For her audition, she sang "Euphoria" by Loreen, and judge Xavier Naidoo chose her for his team. She did very well on the show, winning her team's battle round.
2015–2016: The Eurovision Song Contest
In October 2015, it was announced that Iveta would represent Armenia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. Her song was called "LoveWave". It was a powerful and modern song that she co-wrote.
During the first semi-final of Eurovision, Iveta was seen holding the flag of the Republic of Artsakh, a disputed region. This caused some controversy because political messages are not allowed at the contest. The organizers, the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), called it a "serious breach" of the rules.
When asked about it, Iveta said, "My thoughts are with my Motherland. I want peace everywhere." In the end, she performed amazingly in the final and finished in seventh place with 249 points.
After Eurovision, her career took off. She starred in her first movie, a comedy called Run Away or Get Married, and also recorded the soundtrack for it.
2016–2017: New Music and Projects
After her Eurovision success, Iveta stayed busy. She was a guest on many TV shows and performed at festivals. In late 2016, she released her first extended play (a short album) called IvaVerse, which mixed different music styles like funk and R&B.
She also became a judge on Depi Evratesil, the show that selected Armenia's next Eurovision singer.
In 2017, she teamed up with singer Aram Mp3 to release the song "Dashterov". The song was so popular that it won a Song of the Year award. This led to a bigger project called the Dashterov Project, where they created modern versions of traditional Armenian folk songs. She later released a solo album of these songs called Armenian Folk.
2018–present: Continued Success
In 2018, Iveta continued to release new music and perform. She won the "Best Female Singer of the Year" award at the Swallow Music Awards in Armenia. She also showed her support for peaceful protests in Armenia by performing for the crowds.
In 2019, she had her first concert in Los Angeles, California. She also released a new song and music video called "Hayastani Axjikner" (Armenian Girls), which she described as a song about female empowerment.
During the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, Iveta used her fame to raise awareness and money for people affected by the conflict. She organized an online concert called Rock for Artsakh and was part of a charity song with other Armenian artists.
In 2021, she became a judge on the Armenian version of The Masked Singer. In December 2022, she had the honor of co-hosting the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 when it was held in her hometown of Yerevan.
