James Davison (born in 1827, died December 21, 1897) was an important leader in the city of Chico, California. He served as the seventh President of the Chico Board of Trustees. This group was like the city government for Chico. He held this position from 1886 to 1888.

Early Life and Journeys
James Davison was born in Derry, Ireland in 1827. When he was three years old, he moved to America with his father. His father worked as a weaver in New Jersey.
Returning to Ireland
Later, James and his family went back to Ireland. This happened because his father's health was not good. Also, a business deal in New York did not work out. James was thirteen years old when they returned to Ireland.
Coming Back to America
In 1846, when James was nineteen, he came back to America. He joined the army, specifically Company G of the 2nd Ohio Infantry. He fought in the Mexican–American War under a famous general named Winfield Scott.
The California Gold Rush
After the war, news spread about the discovery of gold. James decided to travel to California to try his luck.
Life in California
When James arrived in California, he spent several years working in the gold mines. He mined near places like Nevada City and the Trinity River. Some days, he earned a lot of money, sometimes as much as $100. Over three years, he saved $6,000.
New Businesses and Family Life
After mining, James started a drug business in Weaverville with his brother. He also worked as a post office clerk. In 1857, he moved to Rabbit Creek (now called La Porte) and opened another drug store. He ran this business until the American Civil War began.
In 1857, James Davison married Agnes M. Waldron. She was from Pennsylvania. They had five children together.
Serving in the Civil War
In 1861, James joined the army again. He became part of the 4th California Volunteer Infantry. He was given important roles, like Second Lieutenant. He was also in charge of the army's supplies and food. He even commanded a military post at Fort Yamhill, Oregon.
Later, he was promoted to First Lieutenant. He served with his company in Arizona and at Camp Cady. He stayed in the army until the war ended.
After the War
After leaving the army, James returned to San Francisco. He worked for a newspaper called the New Age for one year. Then, he became a teacher for six months. After that, he moved to Colusa County and claimed 160 acres of government land. In 1870, he moved to Butte County.
Public Service in Chico
James Davison was elected to the Chico City Trustee board. He served for three years. For two of those years, he was the president of the board. In 1890, he also served as a Justice of the Peace, which is like a local judge.
