Early Life and High School Sports
John Hannah was born in Canton, Georgia. His father, Herbert "Herb" Hannah, was also an NFL player and an offensive lineman for the University of Alabama.
John grew up in Albertville, Alabama. He played high school football, wrestling, and track at Baylor School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In 1967, he won a national championship in wrestling. His high school coach, Luke Worsham, taught him a lot. Hannah later thanked him in his Hall of Fame speech, saying Coach Worsham always supported him. Hannah finished high school at Albertville High School in 1969.
College Football Career
Hannah played as a tackle and guard for the University of Alabama. He played under Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant from 1970 to 1972. He earned All-American honors in 1971 and was a Consensus All-American in 1972.
During his time at Alabama, his team won an SEC championship. He was named to the University of Alabama All-Century Team. He was also on the Alabama 1970s All-Decade team. Coach Bryant later said Hannah was the best lineman he ever coached. Hannah also participated in wrestling, the shot put, and the discus throw in college. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.
Professional Football Career
The New England Patriots drafted Hannah as the 4th overall pick in the first round of the 1973 NFL draft. He played his entire professional career with the Patriots. Even though he was considered a bit short for an NFL player, he was very fast and quick. He also had powerful legs.
Hannah was excellent at protecting the quarterback and blocking for running plays. He was also great as a "pulling guard" on sweep plays. Hannah was very dedicated to football and expected his teammates to be just as committed.
In his rookie season of 1973, Hannah started 13 games. He missed the last game due to a leg injury. With tackle Leon Gray, Hannah formed one of the best guard/tackle duos in the NFL during the 1970s. They helped the 1978 Patriots offensive line set an NFL record with 3,165 rushing yards. This record was later broken, but the 1978 Patriots still hold the record for 181 rushing first-downs.
Hannah rarely missed games due to injuries, only five out of 191 possible games. In the 1985 season, Hannah helped his team reach their first AFC title and Super Bowl XX appearance. He retired from the NFL after playing in Super Bowl XX.
Hannah was named to ten consecutive All-Pro teams from 1976 to 1985. He was also selected for the All-AFC team 11 times. He played in 9 Pro Bowls. He won several awards for offensive linemen, including the NFLPA/Coca-Cola Offensive Lineman of the Year Award three times. He is one of the few players to be named to two different NFL All-Decade Teams (for the 1970s and 1980s). In 1994, he was chosen for the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. In 2019, he was selected for the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
In 1991, Hannah became the first Patriots player to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 1999, The Sporting News ranked him number 20 on their list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. He was the highest-ranking Patriot and the highest-ranking guard on that list.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Hannah became an assistant coach at Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts. He then became the head coach at Somerville High School in 2004. He coached there for one season. In 2005, he became a special assistant coach at his old high school, Baylor School in Tennessee. He left that coaching job at the end of the 2005 football season.
Family Life
John Hannah's brothers, Charley and David, also played as linemen for the University of Alabama. Charley also played in the NFL from 1977 to 1988 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Raiders. Charley was part of the Super Bowl XVIII winning Raiders team.
In 1972, John Hannah married his high school sweetheart, Page Pickens. They had a son and a daughter together.
