Jouji Nakata's Journey to Voice Acting
Jouji Nakata went to the Toho Gakuen College of Drama and Music to study acting. At first, he acted in live-action shows. He played characters like Sir Cowler in Choushinsei Flashman and Great Professor Bias in Choujuu Sentai Liveman. These were part of the Super Sentai series, which is very popular.
He also did theater plays and dubbed voices for foreign shows. Another voice actor, Michiko Nomura, suggested he try voice acting more. Nakata was surprised by how much better the pay was for voice acting. So, he decided to become a full-time voice actor.
Key Voice Roles and Career Highlights
In 1993, Jouji Nakata narrated Mobile Suit Victory Gundam. The next year, he voiced Murakumo Yagami in Blue Seed. He also voiced Balrog (named M. Bison in the movie) in the 1994 anime film Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie.
Nakata said that his role as Folken in the 1996 anime Escaflowne really helped his career. After that, he often voiced important bad guys. These included Gaav in Slayers Next and Brian J. Mason in Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040.
Voicing Alucard and Other Villains
In 2001, he voiced the antihero Alucard in the Hellsing TV show. Looking back, Nakata said Alucard was his favorite and easiest character to voice. He found it simpler to play villains or characters with strong personalities. He later voiced Alucard again in the Hellsing Ultimate animated videos.
Popular Roles for All Ages
The year 2004 was a big one for Nakata. He voiced the main character in Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, which was popular with older audiences. But he also joined Sgt. Frog as Corporal Giroro, a character loved by both kids and adults.
In 2005, he voiced villains like Megatron in Transformers Cybertron and Amshel Goldsmith in Blood+. He also voiced Roy Revant, the main hero in SoltyRei. The director of SoltyRei later asked him to be the narrator for the Amagami SS anime.
Joining the Fate Series
Jouji Nakata became a part of the Fate/stay night series. He voiced Kirei Kotomine in the 2004 game, the 2006 anime, and the 2010 movie Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works. He also voiced Kirei in the prequel series Fate/zero.
Nakata mentioned that the co-creator, Kinoko Nasu, knew him from his earlier acting days. He has been in many of Type-Moon's games and shows. He voiced Nrvnqsr Chaos in Melty Blood and Souren Araya in Kara no Kyoukai. In 2014, he voiced Kirei again for the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works TV show.
Recent Voice Work
In 2013, he narrated Noucome. He also voiced Sigmund in Unbreakable Machine-Doll and Nyanta in Log Horizon.
In video games, he voiced Uesugi and Tokugawa Ieyasu in the Samurai Warriors series. He has also dubbed voices for many foreign movies and TV shows. These include 300, ... and the City, and The Little Mermaid. Nakata feels comfortable with dubbing because of his live-action acting background. However, he still enjoys the creativity of voicing anime characters.
