Juan Pons Álvarez (born August 8, 1946, in Ciutadella, Spain) is a famous Spanish opera singer. He is known around the world as Juan Pons. He sings with a deep voice called a baritone. He is especially famous for his roles in operas by Verdi.

A Star on the Opera Stage

Juan Pons made his international debut in 1980. This was at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy. He performed in the opera Falstaff. Since then, he has sung in many of the world's most important opera houses. These include the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. He also sang at the Vienna Staatsoper and Covent Garden in London. Other famous places include the Opéra of Paris and the Liceo in Barcelona.

Famous Opera Roles

Juan Pons has performed many main baritone roles. A baritone is a male singing voice that is lower than a tenor but higher than a bass. Besides Falstaff, he has sung in many of Verdi's operas. These include Il trovatore, Aida, Rigoletto, and La traviata. He also performed in Pagliacci by Leoncavallo. Other roles include Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni. He also sang in Puccini's Tosca and Madama Butterfly.

Special Performances

In 1993, Juan Pons sang Falstaff at La Scala again. This was to celebrate 100 years since its first performance. He also sang in less common operas. These include Aroldo and Hérodiade.

By 2011, Juan Pons had sung 337 times at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City.

He sang Madama Butterfly at the Arena of Verona and the Torre del Lago Puccini Festival. He also performed La traviata in Zurich. He sang Aida, Nabucco, and Tosca in Vienna.

In 2005, he recorded Puccini's opera Edgar. He recorded it with Plácido Domingo.
