Kings Mountain is a small city located in North Carolina, United States. It's part of the larger Charlotte metropolitan area. Most of Kings Mountain is in Cleveland County, with a small part in Gaston County. In 2020, about 11,142 people lived there.

History of Kings Mountain

Kings Mountain was first called White Plains. The city officially became a city on October 16, 1874. Its name was changed to "Kings Mountain" because it is close to the site of the famous Battle of Kings Mountain. This battle happened in 1780 in York County, South Carolina. It was a very important event during the American Revolutionary War.

Thomas Jefferson said the Battle of Kings Mountain was "the turning point of the American Revolution." A play called Liberty Mountain is performed locally. It tells the story of the battle. In the downtown area, you can find the city museum, the police station, and the Mauney Memorial Library.

Several historic places in Kings Mountain are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Central School Historic District, the King Street Overhead Bridge, and the Margrace Mill Village Historic District. Also listed are the Jacob S. Mauney Memorial Library and Teacher's Home, the Southern Railway Company Overhead Bridge, and the West End Historic District.

Kings Mountain is about 30 miles (48 km) west of Charlotte. You can reach it by taking Interstate 85. The city of Gaffney, South Carolina, is about 21 miles (34 km) southwest along I-85.

The city covers a total area of about 13.97 square miles (36.19 km²). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.

Kings Pinnacle is a small mountain located at the southeast edge of the city. It stands 1,705 feet (520 meters) tall. It is the highest point in the Kings Mountain area. Kings Pinnacle is one of two mountains found in Crowders Mountain State Park. There are trails in the park that lead up to the top of the pinnacle.

About 67% of the people were White, and about 23% were Black or African American. Other groups included Asian, Native American, and people of mixed races. About 4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

Getting Around Kings Mountain

Kings Mountain is easy to reach by major roads. The main highways, Interstate 85, US Highway 74, and US Highway 29, all meet just east of the city.

Two North Carolina State Highways also serve Kings Mountain. These are NC-161, which goes to Bessemer City and York, and NC-216, which goes to Cherryville.

Greyhound Lines offers bus service to Kings Mountain. The bus station is located at Battleground Petroleum, 726 York Rd. It is close to I-85, which makes it easy for travelers.
