History of Lido Beach

Lido Beach was created in the early 1900s by a man named William H. Reynolds. He was a former state senator and a real estate developer. Reynolds had already helped build several neighborhoods in Brooklyn and even an amusement park called Dreamland in Coney Island.

Developing the Island

Starting in 1906, Reynolds bought land along the oceanfront and the rest of Long Beach, New York island. His big plan was to build a boardwalk, houses, and hotels. He also dug out Reynolds Channel to make the area better for boats. This work helped create the popular Long Beach resort area.

How Lido Beach Got its Name

The name "Lido Beach" comes from Venice Lido in Italy. The word "lido" actually means "beach" in Italian. So, it's like saying "Beach Beach"! In 1929, after Reynolds was no longer the mayor of Long Beach, he focused on the area just east of the city. There, he built the Lido Beach Hotel, which had a cool Moorish design.
