Lindau is a beautiful town in Bavaria, Germany. It's special because part of it is on an island in Lake Constance. The lake is called Bodensee in German.

Lindau is close to the borders of Austria and Switzerland. Its coat of arms shows a linden tree. Many people think the town's name comes from this tree. The historic island part of Lindau is small, about 0.68 square kilometers (0.26 square miles). It's connected to the mainland by a road bridge and a railway path.

The town is a popular spot for visitors. People love its old medieval town center. They also enjoy the amazing views of Lake Constance and the nearby Pfänder mountain in Austria.

A Look at Lindau's History

Lindau in the 16th century

The name Lindau was first written down in 882. A monk from St. Gallen mentioned that a nunnery was started on the island. But even before that, people lived here. Remains of an early Roman village from the 1st century have been found.

In 1180, St. Stephan's church was built. Later, in 1224, Franciscan monks built a monastery on the island. Lindau became an Imperial Free City in 1274–75. This meant it was a city that ruled itself, reporting directly to the Holy Roman Emperor.

In 1528, Lindau became a Protestant city during the Protestant Reformation. After the Thirty Years' War ended, a special event began. In 1655, the first Lindauer Kinderfest (children's festival) was held. It was a way to remember the war. This festival is still a very important part of the town's traditions today.

Lindau stopped being an Imperial Free City in 1802. This happened when the Holy Roman Empire ended. After some changes, Lindau finally became part of Bavaria in 1805.

Big changes came in the 1800s. In 1853, a path was built to connect the island to the mainland by railway. A new harbour was built in 1856. This harbour has two famous landmarks: a large lion sculpture and Bavaria's only lighthouse.

After World War II, Lindau was under French control for a while. But in 1955, it returned to Bavaria. Since 1951, Lindau has hosted the Nobel Laureate Meetings at Lindau. Many Nobel Prize winners come here each year for these important science meetings.
