Lingmoor Fell is a cool mountain, known as a fell, in the beautiful Lake District in England. It's about eight kilometers (five miles) west of a town called Ambleside. This fell reaches a height of 469 meters (about 1,540 feet). It acts like a natural wall, separating two valleys: Great Langdale and Little Langdale.

The name "Lingmoor" comes from an old Viking language, Old Norse. The word lyng means "covered in heather." So, Lingmoor Fell is basically a "heather-covered mountain"! The very top of the fell is actually called Brown How on maps.

What Lingmoor Fell Looks Like

Even though bigger and more famous mountains surround it, Lingmoor Fell stands out on its own. It doesn't connect to other mountains with ridges. This gives it a special feature called "topographic prominence." This means it rises quite a bit from the land around it, making it a Marilyn hill. A Marilyn is a hill that has a drop of at least 150 meters on all sides.

Side Pike: A Rock Tower

Lingmoor Fell has a smaller peak nearby called Side Pike. It's about 362 meters (1,187 feet) high and looks like a tall rock tower! You can only reach Side Pike easily from its west and south sides. If you're walking from Lingmoor Fell, you'll find steep cliffs that block the way. You'll need to walk around to the easier slopes to the south to get there.

Plants and Lakes

The lower parts of the fell, especially on its northern and eastern sides, are covered in lovely forests with trees that lose their leaves in autumn. You'll also see patches of purple heather and green bracken plants.

About 600 meters (650 yards) north of the summit, there's a pretty mountain lake called Lingmoor Tarn. It's about 200 meters (650 feet) long and even has a couple of small islands!

Oak Howe Needle: A Climbing Spot

Another interesting rock feature is about one kilometer (0.6 miles) north of the summit. It's called Oak Howe Needle. This tall, detached rock is part of Oak Howe Crag, which is a popular place for climbing. There are more than ten different climbing routes on these rocky cliffs.

Quarrying for Green Slate

For a very long time, people have been digging for special green slate on the northeastern slopes of Lingmoor Fell. This area is above the villages of Elterwater and Chapel Stile. The slate found here is very high quality.

The Burlington quarry in Elterwater has been working for over 300 years and is still active today! It produces more than 800 tonnes of slate every year. Many other quarries have closed over the years. Now, the cliffs from these old quarries are often used by rock climbers.

How to Climb Lingmoor Fell

You can climb Lingmoor Fell from a few different starting points. One popular way is from the village of Elterwater in Great Langdale. Another way is from the Blea Tarn car park in Little Langdale.

The route from Blea Tarn uses an old quarry track for a lot of the way, which makes it easier. The path from Elterwater can be a bit tricky at the start because there are many small paths through the woods and old quarries. But once you get out into the open mountain, the path becomes clear.

The Summit Views

The very top of Lingmoor Fell has a tall dry stone wall running across it. This wall actually goes along the entire spine of the fell, from its eastern base all the way to the cliffs below Side Pike in the west.

From the summit, you can see amazing views! You'll get a great look at the Langdale Pikes and all the other tall mountains around the head of Great Langdale. You can also see the Coniston Fells to the southwest.
