Exploring the Yorkshire Dales
The Yorkshire Dales are a group of unique valleys in northern England. A 'dale' is another word for a valley. These valleys were shaped by rivers and glaciers over many thousands of years. They are known for their stunning scenery, including rolling hills, green fields, and traditional stone walls.
Protecting the Dales
Most of these beautiful dales are part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This park helps protect the natural beauty and wildlife of the area. Other dales, like Nidderdale, Washburndale, and Colsterdale, are in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This also means they are protected.
In 2016, the size of the National Park grew by almost a quarter. This added another 161 square miles (417 square kilometres) of amazing upland landscape to the protected area.
