List of critically endangered birds facts for kids
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) keeps a special list of animals and plants that are in danger. As of December 2019, 224 types of birds were on this list as "critically endangered." This means these birds are at an extremely high risk of disappearing forever from the wild. About 2% of all the bird species studied by the IUCN are in this serious situation.
Some birds on this list, about 19 of them, are even marked as "possibly extinct." This means scientists think they might already be gone from the wild, or even completely extinct.
There are also 55 bird species that are "data deficient." This means there isn't enough information to know how endangered they are. However, these birds often live in small areas or have small populations. Because of this, the IUCN believes they are likely to be in danger and need attention, just like the critically endangered ones.
This article lists the bird species that the IUCN has identified as critically endangered. Birds that are possibly extinct are noted. We'll use their common names where possible, and links will take you to their scientific names.
