List of tallest buildings in Minneapolis facts for kids
Minneapolis, the biggest city in Minnesota, is home to many tall buildings called high-rises or skyscrapers. More than 190 of these buildings are already finished, and 41 of them are taller than 300 feet (91 meters)!
The very tallest building in Minneapolis is the IDS Center. It has 57 floors and stands at an amazing 792 feet (241 meters) tall. It was designed by a famous architect named Philip Johnson. Since it was finished in 1973, the IDS Center has been the tallest building in all of Minnesota. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the entire United States.
Right behind the IDS Center is Capella Tower, which is 775 feet (236 meters) tall and was completed in 1992. Did you know that 17 out of the 20 tallest buildings in Minnesota are right here in Minneapolis? Many of the tallest buildings in Downtown Minneapolis are even connected by the Minneapolis Skyway System. This is a huge network of covered walkways that lets people walk between buildings without going outside, no matter the weather!
The story of skyscrapers in Minneapolis began a long time ago, in 1886, with the Lumber Exchange Building. This building was 165 feet (50 meters) tall and had 12 floors. It's often called the first skyscraper in Minnesota and was one of the first buildings in the country designed to be fire-proof. It's also the oldest building outside of New York City with at least 12 floors!
Minneapolis had a small building boom in the early 1920s. Then, a much bigger boom happened from 1960 to the early 1990s. During this time, 24 of the city's 36 tallest buildings were built, including the IDS Center, Capella Tower, and Wells Fargo Center. Today, Minneapolis has 12 skyscrapers that are at least 492 feet (150 meters) tall. As of 2021, Minneapolis has the second-best skyline in the Midwest (after Chicago) and ranks 11th in the United States for its tall buildings.
In the early 2000s, Minneapolis started another period of building lots of new high-rises. Since then, 11 buildings taller than 300 feet (91 meters) have been completed. The tallest of these new buildings is a residential tower called Eleven. It's 550 feet (168 meters) tall and became the tallest residential building in Minnesota when it was finished in 2022. As of 2023, at least 12 more high-rises or skyscrapers are either being built or are approved to start construction soon!

Tallest Buildings by Pinnacle Height
Sometimes, people measure buildings by their "pinnacle height." This includes radio masts and antennas on top. Some skyscraper fans like this way of measuring because spires and other decorations can be tricky to decide on. We've also included the standard height (which doesn't count antennas) so you can compare.
