Before 2015, Nepal had a different way of dividing its land. It was split into 14 special areas called administrative zones. These zones were known as anchal in Nepali. Inside these zones, there were 77 smaller areas called districts, or jillā.
These 14 zones were also grouped into five larger areas. These larger areas were known as development regions (vikās kṣetra). Each district had a leader called a Chief District Officer (CDO). This officer made sure laws were followed. They also helped coordinate government work in their district.
In 2015, Nepal changed its system. It created seven new provinces. This meant the old zones were no longer used.
