Lucas François Bernard Hernández is a French professional footballer. He was born on February 14, 1996. Lucas plays as a defender for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain. He also plays for the France national team. People know him for being a very flexible and strong defender. His younger brother, Théo Hernandez, is also a professional footballer. Their father, Jean-François Hernandez, was a footballer too.
Lucas started his football journey with Atlético Madrid in Spain. He played over 100 games for them. He helped Atlético reach the 2016 UEFA Champions League final. He also won the Europa League and the Super Cup in 2018. In 2019, he joined Bayern Munich. In his first season there, he won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the Champions League. This amazing achievement is called a "treble." Lucas returned to France in 2023, joining Paris Saint-Germain. He won the Champions League again with PSG in 2025, completing another treble.

Club Career Highlights
Starting with Atlético Madrid
Lucas was born in Marseille, France. His father, Jean-François Hernandez, played for Marseille at the time. When Lucas was four, his family moved to Spain. He joined Atlético Madrid's youth team in 2007 when he was 11. Before that, he played for Rayo Majadahonda.
Lucas first played for Atlético's senior team on December 3, 2014. He played a full game in a 3–0 win against L'Hospitalet in the Copa del Rey cup. His first game in Spain's top league, La Liga, was on December 21. He came on as a substitute in a 4–1 win against Athletic Bilbao.
Making His Mark (2015–2016)
In August 2015, Lucas signed a new contract until 2019. He officially joined the main squad. He played his first game in the UEFA Champions League on March 15, 2016. He came on during extra time against PSV. Atlético won that game after a penalty shootout. He also played in the Champions League final that year. Atlético lost to their rivals, Real Madrid, in a penalty shootout.
Growing Role (2016–2018)
Lucas signed another contract extension with Atlético in August 2016. He played a much bigger role for the team during the 2016-17 season. He played in 22 matches across all competitions. He was a starter in 20 of those games.
During the 2017–18 season, Lucas became a very important player. He played in 44 matches in total. Atlético reached the Europa League final. Lucas started and played the entire match against French club Marseille. Atlético won the game 3–0, and Lucas earned his first major international trophy.
Leaving Atlético (2018–2019)
Lucas scored his first professional goal on January 19, 2019. It was in a 3–0 away win against Huesca. In March 2019, Atlético announced that Lucas would leave the club. He decided to join Bundesliga club Bayern Munich. Bayern paid €80 million for him, which was a record fee for the club.
During his medical check with Bayern, doctors found an injury in his right knee. He needed surgery, which ended his season with Atlético. Lucas played 14 La Liga matches and scored one goal in his final season. In total, he played 22 matches and scored one goal. His former coach, Diego Simeone, later said that Lucas's departure was very difficult for Atlético.
Time with Bayern Munich
Lucas officially joined Bayern Munich on July 1, 2019. He signed a five-year contract. He made his first appearance for Bayern on August 10. It was in a cup match against Energie Cottbus. On August 23, 2020, Lucas and his Bayern teammates won the Champions League. They beat Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 1–0 in the final.
On November 3, 2020, Lucas scored his first goal for Bayern Munich. It was in a 6–2 win against Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League. In April 2021, Bayern was knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.
Lucas missed some games at the start of the 2021–22 season due to a knee injury. He was part of the team that reached the Champions League quarter-finals. They lost to Villarreal.

He played his first game for PSG on August 12, 2023. It was a 0–0 draw against Lorient. On October 4, 2023, Lucas scored his first goal for PSG. It was a header in a 4–1 Champions League loss to Newcastle United. On October 25, 2023, Lucas played against his younger brother, Théo, for the first time in a competitive senior game. PSG won that Champions League match against AC Milan 3–0.
In May 2024, Lucas suffered another serious knee injury during a Champions League semi-final match against Borussia Dortmund. This injury kept him out for the rest of the season. Despite this, Lucas and PSG had a very successful 2024-25 season, winning the Champions League, Ligue 1, and the Coupe de France.
International Career for France
Lucas first played for France's national youth teams in 2012. He played for the under-16, under-18, and under-19 teams. In 2015, he was chosen for the Team of the Tournament at the 2015 UEFA European Under-19 Championship.
In March 2018, Lucas was called up to the senior French national team. He made his debut against Colombia. Lucas was then selected for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He played his first World Cup game on June 16, a 2–1 win against Australia. He played in all of France's matches as they won the tournament. He even provided two assists, including one in the final.
In October 2021, Lucas and his brother Théo were both called up to the national team. They played together for the first time in a senior competitive game. France won that match against Belgium 3–2, with Théo scoring the winning goal. Lucas was also part of France's squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, he got a knee injury early in the first group match against Australia. He had to leave the tournament, and Théo came on to replace him.
