Lucas Hernandez was born in Marseille, France. His father was playing football there at the time. When Lucas was four years old, his family moved to Spain. He joined Atlético Madrid's youth team in 2007 when he was 11. Before that, he played for Rayo Majadahonda.
Lucas first played for Atlético Madrid's reserve team in April 2014. He made his first team debut on 3 December 2014 in a cup match. Later that month, he played his first game in La Liga, Spain's top football league.
In August 2015, Lucas signed a new contract and became a full member of the main team. He played in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in March 2016. He also played in the Champions League final that year, which Atlético lost to Real Madrid.
Lucas became a more important player for Atlético during the 2016-17 season. He played in 22 matches that season. In the 2017–18 season, he played in 44 matches. Atlético reached the Europa League final. Lucas played the whole game as Atlético won 3–0 against Marseille. This was his first major international trophy.
Lucas scored his first goal as a professional player on 19 January 2019. It was in a 3–0 win against Huesca.
In March 2019, Atlético Madrid announced that Lucas would leave the club. He decided to join Bundesliga club Bayern Munich. Bayern paid a large fee of €80 million for him. He played 22 matches and scored one goal in his final season with Atlético.
