The 2020 UEFA Champions League Final was the big championship game of the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League. This is Europe's top club football tournament, organized by UEFA. It was the 65th time this tournament was held. It was also the 28th season since the tournament changed its name from the European Champion Clubs' Cup to the UEFA Champions League.

The final was played on August 23, 2020, in Lisbon, Portugal. The game took place at the Estádio da Luz stadium. It was played between a French team, Paris Saint-Germain, and a German team, Bayern Munich. This was Paris Saint-Germain's first time in a European Cup final. The game was played without any fans in the stadium. This was because of the COVID-19 pandemic in Europe.

The match was first planned for May 30, 2020, in Istanbul, Turkey. But due to the pandemic, UEFA moved it to Lisbon. They decided to have a "final-eight tournament" in Lisbon. This meant single knockout games in two stadiums. This final was the first European top tournament final played on a Sunday. It was also the first one since 2009 not to be played on a Saturday. It was also the first final played after June.

Bayern Munich won the game 1–0. The only goal was scored in the 59th minute by Kingsley Coman. He used to play for Paris Saint-Germain. Coman was chosen as the best player of the match. With this win, Bayern got their sixth European Cup title. They also achieved their second continental treble. This means they won their league, their main domestic cup, and the Champions League all in one season. Bayern was the second European men's football team to win the treble twice. They also became the first team to win any European competition with a perfect winning record. As winners, they played against Sevilla in the 2020 UEFA Super Cup. Sevilla had won the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League. Bayern also qualified for the 2020 FIFA Club World Cup in Qatar. Bayern won both of these later, completing a historic "sextuple" (six trophies in one year).

Teams in the Final

This final featured two strong teams. One was from France and the other from Germany.

Paris Saint-Germain was playing in their first-ever European Cup final. They were the fifth French team to reach this stage. Before this, they had played 110 matches in the European Cup and Champions League. This was the most games for a team reaching the final for the first time.

Bayern Munich was playing in their eleventh European Cup final. This tied them with Milan for the second-most finals appearances. Only Real Madrid has been in more finals. Bayern had won five of their previous finals. Their last win was in the 2013 final.

Where the Game Was Played

LuzLissabon
The Estádio da Luz in Lisbon hosted the final.

The final was supposed to be in Istanbul, Turkey. But because of the COVID-19 pandemic, UEFA changed the location. On June 17, 2020, they decided to move the final to Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon hosted a special "final-eight tournament." All the knockout games were played in two stadiums in the city.

The chosen stadium for the final was the Estádio da Luz. This stadium is also known as the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica. It was the second time this stadium hosted a Champions League final. The first time was in 2014. That year, Real Madrid won their 10th title there.

The Estádio da Luz is the home stadium of the Portuguese team Benfica. It was built in 2003. It hosted five matches during UEFA Euro 2004, including the final game.

Team Journeys to the Final

Both teams had to play many games to reach the final. They played in a group stage first, then knockout rounds.

Paris Saint-Germain's Journey

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) got into the Champions League by winning their French league, 2018–19 Ligue 1.

In the group stage, PSG was in Group A. They played against Real Madrid (Spain), Galatasaray (Turkey), and Club Brugge (Belgium).

  • PSG started strong, beating Real Madrid 3–0 at home.
  • They then won 1–0 against Galatasaray away.
  • They continued their perfect start by beating Club Brugge 5–0 away.
  • PSG won 1–0 at home against Brugge to secure their spot in the next round.
  • They drew 2–2 with Real Madrid away, coming back from two goals down.
  • In their last group game, they won 5–0 at home against Galatasaray.

PSG finished the group stage without losing a game and only let in two goals.

In the knockout stage:

  • Round of 16: PSG played against German club Borussia Dortmund. They lost the first game 2–1 away. But they won the second game 2–0 at home, which was played without fans. This gave them a 3–2 win overall. It was their first time in the quarter-finals since 2016.
  • Quarter-finals: PSG faced Atalanta from Italy. This was a single game played in Lisbon. Atalanta scored first. But PSG scored two late goals in the last few minutes to win 2–1.
  • Semi-finals: PSG played against RB Leipzig from Germany. They won this game 3–0. This sent them to their first-ever Champions League final!

Bayern Munich's Journey

In the group stage, Bayern was in Group B. They played against Tottenham Hotspur (England), Olympiacos (Greece), and Red Star Belgrade (Serbia).

  • Bayern started by winning 3–0 at home against Red Star Belgrade.

  • Bayern won 3–2 away against Olympiacos, coming back from being behind.
  • They won 2–0 at home against Olympiacos to secure their spot in the knockout stage.
  • Bayern then won 6–0 away against Red Star Belgrade, with Robert Lewandowski scoring four goals.
  • In their final group game, they won 3–1 at home against Tottenham.

Bayern finished the group stage with a perfect record, winning all six games.

In the knockout stage:

  • Round of 16: Bayern played against English club Chelsea. They won the first game 3–0 away. The second game was delayed due to the pandemic and played without fans. Bayern won that game 4–1, giving them a big 7–1 win overall.
  • Quarter-finals: Bayern faced Spanish club Barcelona. This was a single game in Lisbon. Bayern won by an amazing score of 8–2! This was one of the highest-scoring games in Champions League history.
  • Semi-finals: Bayern played against French club Lyon. They won this game 3–0. This sent them to their first Champions League final since 2013.

Paris Saint-Germain started the game. Bayern Munich began strongly. But PSG found their rhythm after about 10 minutes.

In the 18th minute, PSG had a great chance. Neymar shot, but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer blocked it. A few minutes later, Bayern's Robert Lewandowski hit the post with his shot. PSG's Ángel Di María also shot over the goal.

Just before half-time, PSG's Kylian Mbappé had a clear chance. But he shot the ball straight at Neuer. The first half ended with no goals.

In the second half, Bayern scored the only goal in the 59th minute. It was a header by Kingsley Coman. He used to play for PSG's youth team! Joshua Kimmich crossed the ball from the right side. Coman headed it into the net past PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

After the goal, Bayern played more defensively. In the 70th minute, Neuer made another great save. He stopped a shot from PSG's Marquinhos. In the last few minutes, Mbappé and Neymar tried to score for PSG, but couldn't.

The match ended 1–0 for Bayern. This win meant they had won the "continental treble."

Match Statistics

These tables show how the teams played during the game.

After the Match

Bayern Munich won their sixth European Cup title. This put them tied with Liverpool for the third-most titles. Only Real Madrid (13) and Milan (7) have more.

Since Bayern also won their league (Bundesliga) and their main cup (DFB-Pokal), they completed their second "continental treble." This is a huge achievement in football. Only Barcelona had won two trebles before.

Kingsley Coman, who scored the winning goal, was named the "man of the match." Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was chosen as the Champions League player of the week. He made three important saves to keep a clean sheet (no goals against).

Bayern became the first club to win a European competition with a perfect winning record. They won all 11 of their matches! This was also the 14th time a club won the Champions League without losing a game. Bayern was the 10th club to do this.

Six Bayern players won their second European Cup title. Five of them had also won with Bayern in 2013: David Alaba, Jérôme Boateng, Javi Martínez, Thomas Müller, and Manuel Neuer. Alphonso Davies became the first Canadian male player to win the Champions League.

Paris Saint-Germain's loss meant that a French team still had not won the Champions League since Marseille in 1993. This final was the lowest-scoring Champions League final since 2003. It was the first 1–0 final since 1998.

After the competition, UEFA picked nine Bayern Munich players for the Champions League team of the season. These included David Alaba, Alphonso Davies, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Müller, Manuel Neuer, and Thiago. For Paris Saint-Germain, Marquinhos, Kylian Mbappé, and Neymar were also chosen for the squad.

Because Bayern won the Champions League and had already qualified through their league, their Champions League spot for the next season went to Ajax. Ajax was the top team in the Dutch league, which had ended early due to the pandemic.

The two teams played each other again the next season in the quarter-finals. Paris Saint-Germain won that time on away goals.
