Manalapan: A Florida Town's Story
How Manalapan Began
In 1889, a man named George H. K. Carter was given land here by U.S. President Benjamin Harrison. This land was not yet named.
Years later, in 1931, the area became an official town. This happened thanks to Harold Stirling Vanderbilt. He named it the "Town of Manalapan." Many of the first people who settled here came from a place called Manalapan, New Jersey. That's how the town got its name!
Mysteries and Important Events
Manalapan has been part of some interesting events. One puzzling mystery in Florida happened here. In 1955, a judge named Curtis Chillingworth and his wife, Marjorie, disappeared. They were last seen leaving a friend's house on their way to their home in Manalapan. Their bodies were never found, and the mystery was later linked to a fellow judge.
Another important event happened in 1977. The U.S. presidential yacht, called the Sequoia, was sold in Manalapan. This happened during the time of President Jimmy Carter. Selling the yacht was a way to show that the government wanted to save money.
In 2022, a very large property in Manalapan was bought by Larry Ellison for a huge amount of money. It became the most expensive home sale in Florida's history. This property is so big it even has tunnels under a road!
