Manzanita is a small city located on the beautiful Oregon Coast in Tillamook County, Oregon. It's found along U.S. Route 101, about 25 miles (40 km) from Seaside to the north and Tillamook to the south. In 2020, about 603 people lived there.

History of Manzanita

Early Inhabitants

For about 12,000 years, the Tillamook people were the first to live along the Oregon coast, including the area around Manzanita. They lived near the tidewaters of the Nehalem Bay. Sadly, many Tillamook people became sick from diseases like smallpox brought by new settlers. The few who survived were moved to special reservations in the 1850s.

Shipwrecks and Legends

The waters off Manzanita's coast have seen some interesting history, including at least two shipwrecks. One ship, the Glenesslin, sank in 1913. Another, the Santo Cristo de Burgos, disappeared way back in 1693. This old shipwreck has led to exciting rumors of hidden treasure on Neahkahnie Mountain!

Founding and Naming the City

Manzanita was planned as a beach resort town in 1912, meaning it was designed to be a fun place for people to visit and relax by the ocean. The Manzanita post office opened in 1914. The town was named after the Arctostaphylos plants, also called manzanita plants, which grow in the area. The word Manzanita means 'little apple' in Spanish.

Manzanita Tornado of 2016

On October 14, 2016, a strong tornado hit Manzanita. It started as a waterspout over the ocean and then moved onto land. Many buildings in the town were damaged, but luckily, no one was hurt. The mayor of Manzanita declared a state of emergency to help the town recover.
