The Duke of Atholl is an important title in Scotland. It is named after the area of Atholl and is held by the leader of Clan Murray. This special title was created in 1703 by Queen Anne for John Murray, who was the 2nd Marquess of Atholl.

The Duke of Atholl also holds many other titles. These include Marquess of Tullibardine and Earl of Strathtay and Strathardle. From 1786 to 1957, the Dukes of Atholl were also known as Earl Strange. This allowed them to be part of the House of Lords, which is a part of the British Parliament.

Today, the Duke's oldest son and future heir is called the Marquess of Tullibardine. The next in line is called the Earl of Strathtay. The Duke of Atholl is also the traditional chief of Clan Murray.

Family History of the Dukes of Atholl

The Murray family, who hold the Atholl title, has a long history in Scotland. An early ancestor, Sir William Murray, lived at Tullibardine in Perthshire. His grandson, Sir John Murray, received the title of Lord Murray of Tullibardine in 1604. He later became the Earl of Tullibardine in 1606.

Later, John Murray, a descendant of the first Earl of Tullibardine, was made the Earl of Atholl in 1629. His son, also named John Murray, became the 2nd Earl of Atholl. In 1676, he received even more titles, including Marquess of Atholl.

His son, John Murray, became the 2nd Marquess. In 1703, he was given the highest title: Duke of Atholl. This made him the first Duke.

The first Duke's oldest son, William Murray, was involved in a rebellion in 1715. Because of this, he was removed from the line of succession. So, the first Duke's third son, James, became the 2nd Duke. James also inherited the title of Baron Strange and became Lord of Mann (ruler of the Isle of Man).

When James, the 2nd Duke, died without living sons, his nephew, John, became the 3rd Duke. This John was the son of Lord George Murray, who had also been involved in a rebellion. However, the House of Lords decided that John could still inherit the titles. The 3rd Duke and his wife sold their rights over the Isle of Man to the British Crown.

The 3rd Duke's son, John, became the 4th Duke. In 1786, he was given the titles of Baron Murray and Earl Strange. These titles allowed him to sit in the House of Lords. The 4th Duke also sold the remaining family rights in the Isle of Man to the British Crown.

His son, John, became the 5th Duke. He never married or had children. So, his nephew, George Murray, became the 6th Duke. George was already the 2nd Baron Glenlyon, a title created for his father in 1821.

The 6th Duke's son, John, became the 7th Duke. He also inherited the title of Baron Percy. He changed the family name to Stewart-Murray and later changed the spelling of "Athole" back to "Atholl".

When the 9th Duke, James Stewart-Murray, died in 1957, some of the English titles, like Baron Murray and Earl Strange, ended. The title of Baron Percy went to another family member. The title of Baron Strange became "abeyant," meaning it was put on hold.

The Dukedom of Atholl and its Scottish titles then passed to Iain Murray, a distant cousin. He was the highest-ranking Scottish peer without an automatic seat in the House of Lords. However, in 1958, he was elected as a Scottish Representative Peer, allowing him to join the House of Lords. Later, a new law in 1963 allowed all Scottish hereditary peers to sit in the House of Lords.

The 10th Duke never married. When he died in 1996, his cousin, John Murray, 11th Duke of Atholl, became the Duke. The 11th Duke passed away in 2012, and his oldest son, Bruce Murray, became the current 12th Duke of Atholl.
