The flamboyant cuttlefish, known scientifically as Ascarosepion pfefferi, is a truly amazing creature of the sea. It lives in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, near places like northern Australia, southern New Guinea, and many islands in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. This cuttlefish is famous for its incredible ability to change colors and its unique way of "walking" on the seafloor.

The Amazing Flamboyant Cuttlefish
Scientific Classification
Scientists group living things into categories to understand them better. This is called taxonomy. The flamboyant cuttlefish was first described in 1885 by William Evans Hoyle. A special female specimen was found in the Arafura Sea during a famous scientific journey called the Challenger expedition. This specimen is now kept at The Natural History Museum in London.
In 2023, scientists decided to move the flamboyant cuttlefish into a new group, or genus, called Ascarosepion. It now shares this group with 13 other cuttlefish species, including the broadclub cuttlefish and the giant cuttlefish.
How to Spot a Flamboyant Cuttlefish
The flamboyant cuttlefish looks quite strong and has a wide, oval-shaped body, called a mantle. Its arms are broad and flat, with four rows of suckers. Male cuttlefish have a special arm, called a hectocotylus, which they use to pass on genetic material for reproduction. This special arm is wide and fleshy.
The cuttlefish also has two long tentacles with flattened clubs at the end. These clubs have 5 or 6 rows of suckers, with some in the middle being much larger than the others.
One very special thing about this cuttlefish is its cuttlebone. Most cuttlefish have a large cuttlebone inside their body that helps them float. But the flamboyant cuttlefish has a small, diamond-shaped cuttlebone. Because it's so small, this cuttlefish can only float for a short time. This unique feature means it often "walks" along the seafloor instead of swimming. It's one of the only cuttlefish known to do this!
Most flamboyant cuttlefish grow to about 8 centimeters (about 3 inches) long in their mantle. They also have three pairs of flat, flap-like bumps, called papillae, on their back and around their eyes.
Where Do They Live?
You can find the flamboyant cuttlefish in many tropical areas. Their natural home stretches from Mandurah in Western Australia all the way northeast to Moreton Bay in southern Queensland. They also live across the Arafura Sea near southern New Guinea. You can also spot them around Sulawesi and the Maluku Islands in Indonesia, and even near the Malaysian islands of Mabul and Sipadan. They are quite common in the Philippines, especially in the Visayas region.
Life in the Ocean
Flamboyant cuttlefish prefer to live on sandy or muddy parts of the seafloor in shallow waters, usually between 3 and 86 meters deep. They are active during the day, which means they hunt for food when the sun is out. They love to eat small fish and crustaceans like crabs and shrimp.
Hunting and Camouflage
These cuttlefish are masters of camouflage. They use complex and varied patterns to sneak up on their prey. Their usual color is a dark brown. But if they feel scared or are attacked, they can quickly change their skin color to amazing patterns of black, dark brown, and white, with bright yellow patches around their body, arms, and eyes.
Warning Colors and Walking
Their arm tips often turn a bright red color. This is a special warning sign to tell predators to stay away. When they show these bright colors, they often use their lower arms to "walk" or "amble" along the seafloor. They rhythmically wave the wide membranes on their arms as they move. Scientists believe this behavior is a way to tell other animals that their flesh might be poisonous.
Life Cycle and Reproduction
When flamboyant cuttlefish mate, they face each other. The male passes a packet of sperm to a pouch on the underside of the female's mantle. The female then uses this sperm to fertilize her eggs.
She lays her eggs one by one, carefully placing them in safe spots. These spots can be small cracks or ledges in coral, rocks, or even pieces of wood. In one interesting case, about a dozen eggs were found hidden under an overturned coconut husk. The female had placed them through a hole in the husk, keeping them safe from hungry fish.
When the eggs are first laid, they are white. But over time, they become clear, allowing you to see the tiny cuttlefish growing inside! Once they hatch, baby flamboyant cuttlefish are already very capable. They can produce the same amazing camouflage patterns as adult cuttlefish. They are born ready to survive on their own and do not need any care from their parents.
Why Aren't They Eaten?
Scientists have found that flamboyant cuttlefish might carry a special substance that makes them potentially toxic. Because of this, people don't usually catch them for food.
However, their spectacular colors and unique behaviors make them very interesting to watch. They are sometimes seen in public aquariums, where they might be part of special breeding programs. For example, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has featured them.
