History of Minisink Ford

The Name "Minisink"

The name "Minisink" used to describe a very large area. This area stretched from Minisink Ford all the way to the Delaware Water Gap. However, in 1800, the Town of Minisink was given its current borders. This town is now thirty miles southwest of Minisink Ford. So, the name "Minisink" refers to different places.

The Battle of Minisink

Minisink Ford was the site of an important event during the American Revolution. In 1779, a battle known as the Battle of Minisink took place here. About 40 to 50 settlers were killed during this fight. They were fighting against a group of Iroquois people and Loyalists. Loyalists were people who supported the British during the war. This group was led by a Mohawk chief and colonel named Joseph Brant. Today, the Minisink Battlefield is a special historic site. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

The Delaware and Hudson Canal

In 1827, the Delaware and Hudson Canal started operating. A canal is a man-made waterway that allows boats to travel. This canal connected Honesdale, Pennsylvania to Kingston, New York. At the time, the company that owned this canal was the biggest private business in the entire country.

Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct

An important part of the canal was Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct. It was built in 1848. This aqueduct connected Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania and Minisink Ford. It was designed by John A. Roebling. He later became famous for designing the Brooklyn Bridge about twenty years later. The aqueduct is like a bridge that carries water for the canal. Parts of the canal, including the Delaware Aqueduct, were named a National Historic Landmark in 1968. The aqueduct has been fixed up and is now protected by the National Park Service.
