Muntelier, also known as Montilier in French, is a town in Switzerland. It is located in the Fribourg canton, a region where most people speak French. However, Muntelier is special because most of its residents speak German! It is a municipality in the See district.

History of Muntelier

Muntelier is an old town. It was first mentioned in official records way back in 1270. Back then, it was called Es Montelliers.

Geography and Land Use

Muntelier covers an area of about 1.1 km2 (0.42 sq mi). A big part of this land, about 26.5%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 33.6% of the area. The rest of the land, about 36.3%, has buildings and roads. A small part, 3.5%, is unproductive land.

Most of the built-up area is for homes and other buildings (14.2%). Roads and transportation take up 12.4%. Industrial buildings are 2.7% of the area. Parks and sports fields make up 5.3% of the developed land.

The municipality is located in the See/Lac district. It used to be a fishing village. Today, it is a commuter town. This means many people who live here travel to work in bigger nearby cities. It is now part of the larger area around Murten.

Population and Languages

Muntelier has a population of 976 people. About 11.1% of the people living here are from other countries. Over the past 10 years (2000–2010), the population grew by 25.2%. Most of this growth was because people moved into the town.

Most people in Muntelier speak German. In 2000, about 86.6% of the residents spoke German as their main language. French is the second most common language, spoken by 7.9% of the people. Portuguese is the third, spoken by 2.1%. A few people also speak Italian.

In 2008, the population was almost evenly split between males and females. About 49.3% were male and 50.7% were female. Most residents were Swiss citizens.

Many people in Muntelier were born in the town or in the same canton. In 2000, about 19.2% were born in Muntelier itself. Another 19.7% were born in the Fribourg canton. About 45.6% were born elsewhere in Switzerland, and 14.3% were born outside Switzerland.

The town has a good mix of age groups. In 2000, children and teenagers (0–19 years old) made up 18.2% of the population. Adults (20–64 years old) were the largest group at 68.2%. Seniors (over 64 years old) made up 13.6%.

Muntelier has some very important historical places. The Von Ernst Manor house and the Platzbünden are listed as Swiss heritage sites of national importance. This means they are very special and protected. The whole village of Muntelier is also part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.

Economy and Jobs

In 2010, the unemployment rate in Muntelier was very low, at just 1%. This means almost everyone who wanted a job had one.

The Fribourg canton has a specific school system:
