Mustafizur Rahman (whose name in Bengali is মুস্তাফিজুর রহমান) is a famous Bangladeshi international cricket player. He is a left-arm fast-medium bowler, known around the world for his amazing 'slower cutters'. These are special deliveries that trick the batsman.

Born on September 6, 1995, in Satkhira, Bangladesh, Mustafizur's career really took off in 2015. During the 2015 Bangladesh Premier League, he impressed everyone with his precise cutters and slower balls. This skill earned him the nickname "The Fizz". This special talent quickly made him famous in international cricket.

Mustafizur joined the Bangladesh national team in 2015. He quickly showed his skills in shorter cricket games. A big moment was his first series against India in 2015. He was the first player ever to take 11 wickets in his first two One Day International (ODI) matches. This helped Bangladesh win a historic series against India. He has played for his country in many big tournaments, like the ICC Cricket World Cup and the ICC Champions Trophy.

In club cricket, he joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. He helped them win his first Indian Premier League (IPL) title. He was the fifth-best wicket-taker in that tournament. He has also played for other IPL teams like Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, and Chennai Super Kings.

He is the only international player to win the "Emerging Player Award" in the 2016 IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was also chosen for the ICC Men's ODI Team of the Year three times (2015, 2018, 2021). Plus, he made the ICC Men's T20I Team of the Year once (2021).

Early Days in Cricket

In 2012, Mustafizur went to Dhaka, Bangladesh's capital, for a special camp for fast bowlers. Before that, scouts noticed him at an Under-17 tournament in Satkhira. He joined the Bangladesh Cricket Board's program for fast bowlers.

Soon, he was picked for the Bangladesh Under-19 team. He played in the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in the UAE, where he took eight wickets. Mustafizur started playing First-class cricket and List-A cricket in 2014. He played for Khulna Division and Abahani Limited. He was also chosen for the Bangladesh A team to tour the West Indies.

Mustafizur's International Career

Becoming a Star Bowler

Mustafizur started his international career in a Twenty20 match against Pakistan on April 24, 2015. In that game, he took the wickets of Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez, who were two very experienced Pakistani batsmen.

In June 2015, India visited Bangladesh for a Test match and three One Day Internationals. Mustafizur was chosen for the ODI team. In his first match, he showed his amazing talent against India's strong batting lineup. He took five wickets in just 9.2 overs. Bangladesh won that match. Mustafizur became the tenth bowler in ODI history to take five wickets in his very first game.

In the second ODI, Mustafizur took another six wickets. This made him the bowler with the most wickets after two ODIs, beating a record held by Brian Vitori from Zimbabwe. He finished the last ODI with 2 wickets. He made history by taking 13 wickets in a three-match ODI series.

The next month, Mustafizur took 5 wickets in three ODIs. This helped Bangladesh win the series against South Africa by 2–1. He also played his first Test match in the same series against South Africa, where he took 4 wickets.

Dealing with Injuries

In November, Bangladesh played against Zimbabwe. Mustafizur played a key role in the ODI matches, taking 8 wickets. Because of his great performance in 2015, the ICC named him in the World ODI XI. He was also chosen for the ODI team of the year by ESPNcricinfo and Cricbuzz. He took his third five-wicket haul in the last game.

He couldn't play much in the T20 series, but he bowled very well, which meant both teams won some games. In January of the next year, Bangladesh played Zimbabwe again in four T20s. Mustafizur played in the first two matches, which Bangladesh won. While bowling in the second T20I, Mustafizur hurt his shoulder. After this, he was not chosen for the team for the first time since he started playing.

During the 2016 Asia Cup the next month, he was again out of the team because of a side strain injury. He only played the first three games. He was able to play against Australia, India, and New Zealand in the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India in March. He became the first Bangladeshi bowler to take five wickets in a T20 World Cup match. He took five wickets for 22 runs against New Zealand. He took a total of 9 wickets in three matches in the 2016 tournament. He was named as the 12th man in the 'Team of the Tournament' for the 2016 T20 World Cup by the ICC.

Mustafizur was again unable to play all matches when Bangladesh toured New Zealand in late 2016 and early 2017. He played his first Test match since August 2015 against Sri Lanka in March 2017, taking eight wickets in that series. In April 2018, he was one of ten cricketers who received a special contract from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). On May 29, 2018, Mustafizur could not play in a T20I series against Afghanistan because of a toe injury.

Recent International Matches (2019-2025)

In April 2019, he was chosen for Bangladesh's team for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. On July 5, 2019, in the match against Pakistan, Mustafizur took his 100th wicket in ODIs. He was Bangladesh's top wicket-taker in the tournament, with twenty wickets in eight matches. After the World Cup, the International Cricket Council (ICC) called Mustafizur the "rising star" of the team.

In September 2021, he was named in Bangladesh's team for the 2021 ICC Men's T20 World Cup. In May 2024, he was again chosen for Bangladesh's team for the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament. On January 12, 2025, he was named in Bangladesh's team for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

In March 2016, the English team Sussex announced they had signed Mustafizur for their T20 Blast competition. He took four wickets and gave away 23 runs in his first match against Essex. After another match, he needed shoulder surgery, which kept him from playing for six months.

Pakistan Super League

Lahore Qalandars chose Mustafizur for the Pakistan Super League. The BCB was not sure about letting him play there. However, the problem was solved when Mustafizur got a shoulder injury in early 2016, which stopped him from playing in the PSL.

How Mustafizur Bowls

Mustafizur became very successful early in his international career by bowling off cutters. This is a type of delivery that moves away from a right-handed batsman. Mustafizur said in June 2015 that he first learned this technique when his friend, Anamul Haque, told him to try bowling a slower ball. According to former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh, his slower balls are very hard for batsmen to understand.

Mustafizur's Life Outside Cricket

Mustafizur grew up in a small town called Satkhira in Khulna, Bangladesh. He is the youngest of six children of Abul Qasem Gazi and Mahmuda Khatun. His father loves cricket. Mustafizur became interested in cricket when he started practicing the game every morning with his brother Mokhlesur Rahman. They would travel about 40 kilometres (25 mi) from home to practice. This sometimes meant he missed school to play cricket.

Before he became a great bowler, Mustafizur played as a batsman using a tennis ball. He says he was inspired by the Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Amir, who is his idol.

On March 15, 2019, Mustafizur and other members of the Bangladesh cricket team were in Christchurch, New Zealand. They were moments away from entering a mosque when a difficult event happened. This event deeply affected all the team members. Mustafizur got married on March 22. His brother hoped that getting married would help him feel better after what he saw in New Zealand.
