History of Niederried
Niederried bei Interlaken was first mentioned in old records in the year 1291. Back then, it was simply called Riede.
The very first signs of people living here are from a neolithic grave. This grave is from the Stone Age, a very long time ago! There is also a grave from the La Tène culture, which was an ancient Iron Age culture.
For many years, the village was not often mentioned in history books. Between 1411 and 1439, the area of Ringgenberg, which included Niederried, became part of the Interlaken Monastery.
In 1528, the city of Bern changed its religion to Protestantism. This was part of a big religious change called the Reformation. Bern wanted everyone in its area, including Niederried, to follow this new faith. The monastery tried to fight against this, but it didn't work. Bern then took over the monastery's lands. Niederried became part of Bern's local government area, known as a bailiwick, in Interlaken.
The village is on a narrow strip of land. It sits between a lake and mountains. This meant there wasn't much space for farming. In the 1800s, some tourists started visiting the village. A pier was built in 1877 for steamships that brought visitors. Later, in 1916, a railway line called the Brünig railway line was finished. It passed right through the small village.
What Does the Name Niederried Mean?
The name "Niederried bei Interlaken" means "lower Ried near Interlaken." The word Ried has two possible meanings. It could come from an old German word meaning "clearing" (an open space in a forest). Or, it could come from a Swiss German word for land where reeds and swamp grass grow.

The green part is important because it appears on the coats of arms for both Niederried and Oberried. It stands for the marshy land (ried in German) that gave these towns their names. On Niederried's coat of arms, the green area is at the bottom (nieder means "lower"). On Oberried's, it's at the top (ober means "upper").
