Nine Standards Rigg is a famous hill in the Pennine Hills of England. It's also known as Hartley Fell. This special spot is close to the border between Cumbria and North Yorkshire. You can find it a few miles south-east of Kirkby Stephen.

The hill is just outside the Yorkshire Dales National Park. It's also part of a beautiful area called the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The name "Nine Standards Rigg" comes from a group of stone piles, called cairns, near the top. These stone piles are known as the Nine Standards.

Exploring Nine Standards Rigg

Nine Standards Rigg is a well-known hill. It's listed in a special book about hills called The Hewitts and Marilyns of England. This book helps people find and learn about different hills. The hill is named after the Nine Standards, not Hartley Fell, in this important guide.

What are the Nine Standards?

The Nine Standards are a group of tall stone piles. They are located near the summit of Nine Standards Rigg. Some of these piles were once over four metres (about 13 feet) high! They stand at a height of 650 metres (about 2,130 feet) above sea level.

Their original purpose is a bit of a mystery. One idea is that they were used as markers. They might have shown the border between old areas like Westmorland and Swaledale. Today, they are a famous landmark. They stand right on the path of the Coast to Coast Walk. This popular walking route goes between Kirkby Stephen and Keld.

Amazing Views from the Top

The Nine Standards offer a much better view than the actual summit marker. The summit has an Ordnance Survey trig point. This is a small pillar used for mapping. But the Nine Standards give you a wider, more impressive view.

From the top, you can see many other famous hills. To the north-west, you might spot Cross Fell and Great Dun Fell. If you look to the south-west, you'll see Wild Boar Fell and the Howgills. Further to the west, you can see the High Street Range. This is a part of the eastern Lake District. To the south-east, you'll find Great Shunner Fell and Rogan's Seat. Great Shunner Fell is crossed by the famous Pennine Way walking trail.
