History of Niwot

Niwot gets its name from Chief Niwot. He was a leader of the Arapaho tribe in the Boulder area during the 1800s. His name means "left-handed."

The town of Niwot was first planned in 1875. It was built along the Colorado Central Railroad tracks. At first, the shops were on the west side of the tracks. Homes were mostly on the east side. By the early 1900s, most of the town had moved to the east. Buildings on the west side were either moved or burned down.

For over ten years, the famous shoe company Crocs, Inc. had its main office in Niwot. They moved their headquarters in June 2020.

Geography and Location

Niwot is located on Colorado State Highway 119. It sits about halfway between the cities of Boulder and Longmont.

The Niwot CDP covers an area of about 10.37 square kilometers (4 square miles). A small part of this area, about 0.024 square kilometers, is water.
