The Quarter Pounder is a popular hamburger sold by the worldwide fast food company McDonald's. It gets its name because the patty (the meat part) weighs about one quarter of a pound before it's cooked. That's about 4 ounces or 113 grams.

This famous burger first appeared in 1971. Over time, McDonald's has made some changes to it. For example, in 2015, they increased the precooked weight of the patty slightly.

The Quarter Pounder's Story

The Quarter Pounder was invented by a man named Al Bernardin. He owned some McDonald's restaurants and used to be in charge of creating new products for the company. He came up with the idea in Fremont, California, in 1971.

Bernardin started trying out new food items in his own restaurants. The Quarter Pounder was a big hit right away. Its slogan was "Today Fremont, tomorrow the world." Because it was so popular, McDonald's added it to their main menu across America in 1973.

McDonald's has continued to improve the Quarter Pounder. Since May 2018, in the United States, they use fresh beef without added preservatives for these burgers. Later that year, in October 2018, they also removed all artificial flavors and colors from the Quarter Pounder.

What's Inside a Quarter Pounder?

A Quarter Pounder usually has a beef patty, pickles, raw onion, ketchup, and mustard. The patty weighs about 120 grams (or 4.2 ounces) before cooking. After it's cooked, it weighs around 85 grams (or 3 ounces).

In some places, like the United States, Portugal, and South Africa, you can find different versions. These include the Quarter Pounder with cheese, Quarter Pounder with Cheese & Bacon, and the Quarter Pounder Deluxe.

The amount of nutrients in a Quarter Pounder can be different depending on the country. For example, in Australia, where McDonald's uses local beef, a Quarter Pounder has more protein than the same burger in the United States.

Different Names Around the World

Even though the pound isn't used everywhere for weight, many English-speaking countries still call the burger the Quarter Pounder. But in other parts of the world, it has different names.

For instance, in French-speaking Canada, it's called Quart de livre, which means "quarter pound." In Brazil, it's Quarterão com Queijo. In Spain and Hispanic America, it's Cuarto de Libra con Queso.

Some European countries, like Norway and the Netherlands, simply call it the Quarter Pounder. In Hong Kong, it's known as "full three taels" (Chinese: 足三両) in Chinese. This is because three taels is the same weight as a quarter pound. In Taiwan, it's called the "four-ounce beefburger" (Chinese: 四盎司牛肉堡).

In other places, the name is completely different. In France, Belgium, Croatia, and Cyprus, it's called the Royal Cheese. In German-speaking countries, it's known as a Hamburger Royal. In Germany, they even have a Hamburger Royal TS, where "TS" stands for Tomate und Salat (tomato and lettuce). In Poland, it's called McRoyal.
