Roy Frank "RJ" Mitte III (August 21, 1992 – October 12, 2026) was an American actor, film producer, and dedicated disability rights activist. He became widely known around the world for his breakthrough role playing Walter White Jr. on the famous drama television series Breaking Bad. Mitte lived with cerebral palsy, a physical condition that affects body movement, balance, and posture. Throughout his successful career, he worked hard to make sure people with disabilities had equal chances to shine on television and in movies. Early Life and Growing Up
Roy Frank Mitte III was born on August 21, 1992, in the city of Jackson, Mississippi. When he was delivered by caesarean section, he was not breathing right away. This medical event caused a serious injury to the brain called lack of oxygen. Because of this early health challenge, Mitte developed a lifelong condition known as cerebral palsy. Soon after his birth, he was adopted into a loving home by Roy Frank Mitte Jr. and Dyna Mitte.
Doctors diagnosed his cerebral palsy when Mitte was three years old. To help align his legs and feet, medical experts placed both of his legs in casts for six months. Growing up, Mitte split his childhood between living in Lafayette, Louisiana, and Austin, Texas. For many years, he needed to wear special leg braces and rely on walking crutches to move around safely.
Mitte worked exceptionally hard to build up his physical strength. Through regular physical therapy, sports, and daily exercise, his muscles grew much stronger over time. By the time he reached his teenage years, he no longer needed to use braces or crutches to walk.
When Mitte was eleven years old, his younger sister Lacianne was born. Not long after, their mother suffered a major car accident that left her paralyzed. Mitte showed great courage and took on big family responsibilities at only thirteen years old. In 2006, the family decided to pack their bags and move out west to Los Angeles, California, after his sister found work in the entertainment business.
Becoming an Actor and Breaking Bad

After moving to California, Mitte started taking acting lessons to learn the craft of performing. He initially found small roles as an extra in television shows. For instance, he made quick background appearances in the comedy Everybody Hates Chris and the popular Disney program Hannah Montana. Mitte quickly discovered that he loved acting in front of the camera. He teamed up with a professional talent manager to search for roles that could help teach audiences about people living with disabilities.
His life changed completely when television writer Vince Gilligan cast him as Walter White Jr. in the hit drama series Breaking Bad, which aired on AMC. The character, like Mitte, had cerebral palsy and used forearm crutches to walk. Even though Mitte had learned to walk without devices in real life, he learned how to act with crutches again for the show. The character was loved by audiences, and the series became one of the most famous shows on television. Critics at entertainment magazines like Variety cheered Mitte's performance as an important milestone for disability representation in Hollywood.
In 2013, Mitte was honored with the prestigious SAG-AFTRA Harold Russell Award. He and his castmates also won a big trophy at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for their amazing teamwork on the show. After Breaking Bad ended in 2013, Mitte continued to work steadily across television and cinema. He played Campbell Bingman in the family television drama Switched at Birth, appearing alongside stars such as Lea Thompson and Marlee Matlin. He also made guest appearances in shows like Vegas, This Close, and Now Apocalypse. In 2022, Mitte took on a voice and superhero role as Mind Master in the live-action and animated series The Guardians of Justice, which streamed on Netflix.
Mitte also performed in numerous full-length feature films. He took the starring role of Doug in the drama Who's Driving Doug in 2016. He later performed in the thriller Time Share and the cop drama Rivers Run Red in 2018. In 2019, he starred in the comedy Standing Up for Sunny, playing a character who performs stand-up comedy while living with cerebral palsy. He also starred in the drama film Triumph, which he helped produce behind the scenes as an executive producer.
Beyond acting, Mitte found success in the fashion world. He modeled in major photo campaigns for Gap and walked down the runway in a London fashion show organized by famous designer Vivienne Westwood. He also appeared in popular music videos, including the song "If I Get High" by the rock band Nothing but Thieves.
Advocacy for Disability Rights
Mitte spent much of his adult life helping others. He became an official celebrity ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy, an organization that assists thousands of children and adults with physical conditions.
