Tinton Falls is a town, or borough, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. It's located in the middle of the Jersey Shore area. Tinton Falls is a busy place for businesses, with many stores and company offices. It's also a place where many people live and commute to work in New York City.
In 2020, about 19,181 people lived in Tinton Falls. This was an increase from 17,892 people in 2010.
The borough started on August 15, 1950. It was first called New Shrewsbury. This happened after people voted to separate from Shrewsbury Township. In 1975, the name changed to "Tinton Falls" to avoid confusion with other towns. The name comes from Tinton Manor, a large property owned by Lewis Morris. This area was known for its gristmill, making it an early mill town in New Jersey. Tinton Falls is also home to the tallest waterfall on New Jersey's coastal plain. This waterfall once helped power the old mill.

History of Tinton Falls
The area of Tinton Falls was first settled by Europeans in the late 1600s. This likely began with land purchases from the Lenni Lenape Native Americans in 1664. People were probably drawn to the area because of its water power and iron ore. Soon after the land was bought, a man named James Grover built an ironworks along the river. Grover is thought to be the founder of the community. In the 1600s, it was called "New Shrewsbury." Back then, the waterfall was about 30 feet (9.1 m) high. Over time, due to natural changes and a broken dam, it has become smaller.
The Ironworks and Tinton Manor
Grover's ironworks was very important to the community. It was one of the oldest ironworks built in the United States. In 1675, Colonel Lewis Morris bought part of the ironworks company. He also gained a large area of land along the Shrewsbury River. Morris also bought land from Bartholomew Applegate, who had built a corn mill nearby.
Morris named his land "Tintern Manor," after his family's lands in Great Britain. Tintern Abbey, a famous old building in Wales, is often believed to be where the name Tinton Falls comes from.
In 1691, Colonel Morris passed away. He left the ironworks and Tinton Manor (a slightly changed name of "Tintern Manor") to his nephew, who had the same name. By 1714, the ironworks was not as profitable. However, there are mentions of the Tinton Falls ironworks as late as 1844.
Becoming Tinton Falls
In 1693, Tinton Manor and the land around it became part of Shrewsbury Township. At that time, Shrewsbury Township covered a large area of eastern Monmouth County. Over the years, many new towns were created, and Shrewsbury Township became smaller.
In July 1950, Tinton Falls and Wayside separated from Shrewsbury Township. They renamed themselves the Borough of New Shrewsbury. To avoid confusion with other nearby towns named Shrewsbury, the people of New Shrewsbury voted to change the name again. In 1975, the community officially became "The Borough of Tinton Falls."
Geography
Tinton Falls covers about 15.60 square miles (40.41 km2) in total. Most of this is land, about 15.48 square miles (40.08 km2). A small part, 0.13 square miles (0.33 km2), is water.
Some smaller communities and places within Tinton Falls include Wayside, Green Grove, Hockhockson, Macedonia, Pine Brook, Reevytown, West Shrewsbury, and Wileys Corner.
Tinton Falls shares borders with several other towns in Monmouth County. These include Colts Neck, Eatontown, Middletown, Neptune, Ocean Township, Red Bank, Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Township, and Wall Township.

In 2010, there were 17,892 people living in Tinton Falls. There were 8,355 households and 4,462 families. The town had about 1155.3 people per square mile.
Most of the people in Tinton Falls were White (82.39%). About 9.34% were Black or African American. About 4.67% were Asian. People of Hispanic or Latino background made up 6.25% of the population.
About 19.0% of the people were under 18 years old. About 25.6% were 65 years or older. The average age in Tinton Falls was 46.9 years.
Economy
The Jersey Shore Premium Outlets is a large outdoor shopping mall. It opened in November 2008. It has 120 outlet stores and a food court. It covers a huge area of about 435,000 square feet (40,400 m2).
The Tinton Falls Solar Farm is a big solar power plant. It covers 170 acres (69 ha) and has 85,000 solar panels. When it was built, it was one of the largest solar farms in the northeastern United States.
Commvault Systems is a company that makes software for managing computer data. It was started in 1996. Commvault's main office is located in Tinton Falls.
Parks and Recreation
Overlook by the Falls is a natural area near the town's waterfalls. It has trails where visitors can see the falls and local wildlife.
Tinton Falls has several parks:
- Hockhockson Park has three baseball fields and basketball courts.
- Liberty II Park has two football fields, a softball field, and basketball courts.
- Riverdale West Park has two soccer fields and a basketball court.
- The Sycamore Recreation Complex has six lighted multi-purpose fields.
Shark River Park was the first park in the Monmouth County Park System. It opened in 1961. It covers 961 acres (389 ha) along the Shark River. Parts of the park are in Tinton Falls, Neptune Township, and Wall Township.
The Twin Brook Golf Center used to be a public golf course and driving range. In 2021, Amazon bought the land to build a delivery warehouse.

The Tinton Falls Historic District is a special area recognized for its history. It is located where Tinton and Sycamore Avenues meet. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 10, 1977. It is important for its history in archaeology, industry, military, and politics.
Education
Students in Tinton Falls from kindergarten through eighth grade attend schools in the Tinton Falls School District. Students from Shrewsbury Township and children of military families from Naval Weapons Station Earle also attend these schools. All three schools are in Tinton Falls.

Tinton Falls has many roads. Major highways that go through the town include the Garden State Parkway, Route 18, Route 33, and Route 66. The Garden State Parkway has several exits in Tinton Falls.
Important county roads like CR 520, CR 537, and CR 547 also pass through Tinton Falls.
Public Transportation
- Bus: Bus service is available from the Garden State Parkway to Lower Manhattan in New York City. NJ Transit also offers local bus service on routes 836 and 838.
- Train: NJ Transit offers train service at the Red Bank station. Trains run on the North Jersey Coast Line.
- Air: Monmouth Executive Airport is nearby for private jets. The closest major airport is Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark. It is about 30 miles (48 km) north of Tinton Falls.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center (JSUMC) is a large hospital nearby. It is located in Neptune Township. It is part of the Hackensack Meridian Health system.
