History of Rietheim
Rietheim was first written about in the year 1239. Back then, it was called Riethein. In the 1200s, a noble family named Rietheim lived there.
The village was part of the court of Klingnau. From 1415 to 1798, it was under the main court of Baden. Local legal matters were handled by the Bishop of Constance. This was done through Zurzach Abbey.
During the Protestant Reformation, many people in Rietheim changed their religion. They chose the new Protestant faith.
In 1915, a company called Swiss Sodafabrik started a project. They wanted to dig for salt in an area called Rietheimerfeld. This company later changed its name to Solvay in 1922. However, they stopped the project in the early 1960s. This was because the ground started to sink, a problem called subsidence.
Rietheim got its own railroad station in 1876. This connected the village to the train line between Koblenz and Winterthur. In 1977, a new school building was built for younger students.
Long ago, Rietheim was mostly about farming and growing grapes for wine. But now, it has become a place where people live and travel to work in other towns. Rietheim shares many services with Zurzach, like managing money, education, and waste.
