The History of Rose Gardens
Rose gardens have a long and beautiful history. People have enjoyed growing roses for centuries. They create these gardens for beauty, study, and even for business.
Early Rose Gardens and Famous Creators
One of the first well-known rose gardens was created by Joséphine de Beauharnais. She was the empress of France. Her garden was at Malmaison, a beautiful estate. When she passed away in 1814, her garden had about 250 different types of garden roses. It was a very impressive collection for its time.
Another old and important rose garden is the Rosenhöhe Park. This garden is located in Darmstadt, Germany. Princess Wilhelmine of Baden started this garden in 1810. These early gardens helped to make rose growing popular.
Commercial Rose Gardens
Growing roses for business became very important in the 19th century. People started creating large rose gardens to develop new types of roses. These gardens helped share beautiful roses with more people.
